Accreditation system

Document Translation for Australia

NAATI accreditation is COMPULSORY. A translation that does not carry a NAATI stamp is not accepted, however well qualified it may be, and this is the strictest rule setting Australia apart from every other country.

Certification regime

Which translations does Australia accept?

A translator accredited by a particular body is required. For a translation made in Türkiye to be valid in Australia, it has to be prepared in line with that regime.

Apostille or consular legalisation?

Türkiye has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1985. Where the other country is a party as well, an apostille on the document is enough; where it is not, consular legalisation is required.

Australia is a party to the Hague Convention — an apostille on your documents is enough.

The order matters
  • 01 Obtain the document from the issuing authority The civil registry office, the university, the courthouse — the source document must be an original.
  • 02 Have the apostille or legalisation added The governor's office for administrative documents, the judicial justice commission for judicial ones. This step comes BEFORE the translation.
  • 03 Have the sworn translation made Prepared in line with the NAATI certified translator regime that applies for Australia.
  • 04 Notarisation, where required If the institution asks for it, the translator's signature is certified by a notary.

Translation languages and rates for Australia

Prices are starting per-page rates on economy delivery. Full list by language pair.

Australia enforces one of the strictest rules in the world on document translation, and that strictness is not open to negotiation. A translation that carries no accreditation will not be accepted, no matter which agency produced it or how carefully. What is at stake here is not quality but the presence of a credential the system recognises. This single rule governs the whole of the planning for an Australian file.

What accreditation means in practice

The accreditation details are expected to be visible on the face of the translation: the translator’s name, the accreditation particulars, the language pair and the direction in which the translator is authorised, the date and a signature. The question of direction is often overlooked; being authorised one way round does not mean being authorised the other. A translation prepared the wrong way round can be refused even when it is technically accredited.

The second point of detail is that the accreditation must be current. These authorisations are granted for a fixed term and have to be renewed. A translation prepared on the basis of an entry that has expired causes trouble at the checking stage. In an Australian file, then, when the translation was made matters as much as who made it.

Skills assessment is a world of its own

On Australia’s skilled migration routes a diploma on its own is not enough; a body determined by your occupation assesses whether your education and your experience are suitable for that occupation. These bodies vary from one occupation to the next, and each has its own list of documents and its own expectations as to form. The file required for engineering bears no resemblance to the one required for information technology or for health.

What they have in common is this: every one of them wants detail. Course descriptions, programme length, placement records and date-based evidence of work experience all go into the file. The bulk of these documents runs well beyond the diploma and makes up the longest item in the preparation. To plan the scope and the cost in advance, take a look at our rates page.

How to document work experience

Experience is decisive both in the skills assessment and in the points test, and in files coming from Türkiye it is usually the weakest link. What is expected is plainly set out: dates of employment, job title, weekly hours, a description of duties and, where possible, salary information. Two-sentence reference letters do not meet that expectation.

The social security employment record is a strong supporting document because it confirms the dates from an independent source. Payslips and, where they exist, employment contracts serve the same purpose. In translating these documents it is important that job titles are carried across without being pushed away from what they mean in Türkiye; an inflated rendering of a title costs you credibility in the assessment.

State-nominated routes and the student track

Some of Australia’s migration routes depend on nomination by a state or territory, and each state has its own occupation list and its own additional conditions. An occupation sought in one state may not appear on the list in another. This does not change your list of documents, but it bears directly on the decision of which state to apply to and therefore on the order in which you prepare.

For those going as students, the weight of the file lies in the academic record and in financial capacity. The offer of admission carries the process, but your education documents from Türkiye and your financial documents have to be submitted in full. In bank documents, the amounts, the account holder and the date range are expected to be plainly visible.

Once you reach the post-study work and settlement stage, your history in Türkiye comes back into play. Having accredited translations of your diploma, academic transcript and employment history ready before you leave the country therefore saves you the trouble of obtaining documents from a distance later on.

Timing and validity periods

Several documents in the Australian process carry a validity period, and those periods are tied to one another: the language test result, the skills assessment report and the medical and criminal record documents. When one of them expires the chain breaks and you are obliged to renew. The process has to be planned as a whole rather than piece by piece.

A practical suggestion: have the documents that do not go stale, such as the diploma, the academic transcript and the course descriptions, prepared at the very start, and obtain the time-limited ones when their turn comes. That distinction is the choice that saves the most time and money in Australian files. To work out the scope together, you can send us your documents.

Common grounds for refusal

  • Applying with a translation that carries no accreditation.
  • The direction of the translation not being the right one.
  • Course descriptions supplied in summary form.
  • Weekly hours and a description of duties missing from the experience documents.
  • Validity periods that do not line up with one another.

The account below summarises typical practice; every consulate applies its own current guidance. For definitive information, rely on the current announcements of the institution concerned.
