German Translation

Compound nouns can run very long, and overflow is common in interface and form translation. Germany requires a court-sworn translator (beeidigter Übersetzer).

A language of noun phrases: German official style

What defines German official writing is its reliance on the noun phrase. What Turkish builds around a verb is more often than not compressed into a single noun phrase in German, and every element inside that phrase takes the case demanded by the preposition governing it. The translator’s real work is not finding words but assembling that chain of cases correctly: a genitive in the wrong place quietly alters the legal sense of the sentence. Add the verb sliding to the end of the subordinate clause, and the German version of a long Turkish provision keeps the reader waiting until the very last word before the meaning closes.

The second technical matter is how compound nouns are formed. Writing two nouns side by side is not enough; the linking element between them follows rules, and a badly formed compound reads in an official text like an invented term. Abbreviated terms hold a similar trap: leaving a Turkish abbreviation as it stands leads the German official to treat the document as incomplete.

The commonest mistakes going from Turkish into German

Most errors grow out of the assumption that the administrative structures of the two countries map onto each other exactly. A procedure that belongs to one authority in Türkiye falls to a different one in Germany, so the equivalent has to be built on what the authority does rather than on what it is called.

DocumentCritical pointWhere it is filed
Birth and marriage recordsPlace names follow the spelling in the register, not a translationRegistry office
Diploma and academic transcriptThe grading system is not translated but explainedRecognition unit
Vocational and master craftsman certificatesTeaching hours and placement periods carried over in fullProfessional chamber
Power of attorneyThe wording limiting authority is preserved to the letterNotary / court

Another frequent mistake is trusting words that look familiar. Some words that reached Turkish by other routes carry an entirely different sense in German, and in commercial and insurance texts especially these false equivalents can move liability from one party to the other. In official translation what counts is not whether a word feels familiar but how the relevant legislation defines it.

As for length, the German version usually runs to fewer words than the Turkish but to far longer ones. The consequence is a line-breaking problem in narrow table columns and in the confined space beneath a seal, and the way out is to rebuild the table layout, not to abbreviate the word.

Three flows that shape demand

The first flow is family reunification: birth, marriage, divorce and custody records are called for together with proof of income, and the whole file has to come from one hand, since two translators spelling the same person differently is on its own a ground for refusal. The second is professional recognition. In healthcare, engineering and the skilled trades a diploma alone will not do; the curriculum, the practical hours and the examination content are requested as well, and that pushes the volume up. The third is industry: along the machinery and automotive supply chain, technical specifications, quality manuals and safety data sheets are translated as a matter of routine.

Pension and social security correspondence sits alongside these flows. For people who worked abroad for many years and then returned to Türkiye, service records, insurance contribution histories and court judgments travel back and forth between the institutions of the two countries. In files of this kind, carrying date ranges and employer names across exactly is what decides whether the calculation comes out right.

Figures, units and addresses

The decimal separator is the comma and the thousands separator the full stop. Turkish habit is the same, so mistakes are rare here, but in documents that have passed through an English intermediate version the order may have been reversed, and that changes an amount by a factor of a thousand. In an address the street name comes first and the number after it, and the postcode stands before the town. Leaving a Turkish address in its source order means the notice never arrives, so the address field is restructured in form while its content stays untouched.

Name and date formats

German record systems accept Turkish letters, so what is expected is not a simplified name but one spelled exactly as in the passport. A woman’s surname before marriage occupies a field of its own, and the maiden-name entry in the Turkish civil register belongs there. Turkish middle names written as one word must not be broken up, and a middle name must not be presented as though it were a separate given name.

Dates run day, month, year, separated by full stops, and when the month is given in letters it begins with a capital. In long official texts, dropping the leading zeros and rendering the Turkish dative date formula with a date construction rather than a preposition causes no trouble when the document is machine-read. Write down which authority the document is going to before you send it; you can then see the turnaround on the quote screen and look through the unit prices.
