Document Translation for Sweden

Life in Sweden is built around a personal identity number. Without it, opening a bank account, gaining regular access to health care, starting certain jobs and completing a good many official procedures all become difficult. To obtain the number you have to be entered in the population register, and for that the documents you bring from Türkiye have to be accepted. The quality of your preparation therefore has a direct bearing on how comfortable your first months in Sweden turn out to be.

Population registration is the first link in the chain

At the registration stage, documents of identity and civil status are asked for, along with any relating to children. What is expected is that the documents be in full format and carry the personal details in full. The abbreviated printouts in wide use in Türkiye do not carry the names of the mother and father or the place of birth, and are found wanting at this stage.

Married couples are asked for a marriage certificate, and those who have divorced for a final court judgment. Translating only the operative part of the judgment counts as a shortcoming; the reasoning and the annotation of finality belong to the document too. This is the detail on which registrations turning on a remarriage get stuck.

For children, documents showing the position on custody may be asked for alongside the birth certificate. Where a parent is moving on their own, the consent of the other parent is required, and the scope of that document has to be written out plainly. A consent drawn narrowly, or in general terms, causes trouble during registration.

The number of authorised translators is limited

Here is the practical problem peculiar to Sweden. Because authorisation is granted by examination and by rigorous assessment, the number of authorised translators in any one language pair is limited. In busy periods that means delivery takes longer. Leave the work to the last minute and the calendar runs against you.

The diploma assessment is part of looking for work

In the Swedish job market, an assessment showing what a foreign diploma amounts to serves employers as a strong reference. Even where it is not compulsory, adding it to an application makes a difference, because the employer is then not left to interpret a diploma from an unfamiliar university unaided.

An assessment application asks about the length and the content of the programme as well as the diploma and the academic transcript. In regulated fields such as the health professions, a separate institution comes into it and the file grows markedly: the curriculum, internship records and practice hours are all asked for. Keeping the two tracks apart saves you translating documents needlessly.

The language requirement comes up at this point as well. Some professional registrations look for a certain level of Swedish; that is not something a translation will resolve, but it does bear on the timetable. Running the preparation of documents in parallel with learning the language shortens the total.

The detail expected in an employment file

Work permits in Sweden depend on a job offer and on the terms of that offer. While the employer evidences the salary, the working hours and the insurance arrangements, the documents proving your qualifications and your background belong to you. The diploma, letters about your experience and any professional certificates must be submitted in full.

What is expected of experience documents is clear: the dates worked, the job title and a detailed description of the duties. Letters of reference two sentences long, obtained from employers in Türkiye, do not meet that expectation. A translation of your social security employment record is the strongest attachment to your file, since it confirms your working history from an independent source.

If you are moving with family members, the documents of the spouse and the children are assessed at the same time. If one person’s documents are missing or have been prepared to a different standard, the whole file waits. Documents need to be planned as a household rather than person by person.

The order of the process

1. Obtain full-format, current documents from the institutions in Türkiye.
2. Complete the certification annotation before the translation.
3. Have the translation done in one go, for all the documents together.
4. Complete the residence application, then apply for population registration.
5. Start the diploma assessment in parallel with the search for work.
