Apostille or consular legalisation?

Türkiye has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1985. Where the other country is a party as well, an apostille on the document is enough; where it is not, consular legalisation is required.

New Zealand is a party to the Hague Convention — an apostille on your documents is enough.

The order matters
  • 01 Obtain the document from the issuing authority The civil registry office, the university, the courthouse — the source document must be an original.
  • 02 Have the apostille or legalisation added The governor's office for administrative documents, the judicial justice commission for judicial ones. This step comes BEFORE the translation.
  • 03 Have the sworn translation made Prepared in line with the NZSTI member translator regime that applies for New Zealand.
  • 04 Notarisation, where required If the institution asks for it, the translator's signature is certified by a notary.

Preparing documents for a New Zealand procedure has two separate axes: who made the translation and how, and where your diploma sits within the local education framework. The two run through different institutions on different timetables, and neither takes the place of the other. Most applicants from Türkiye notice the distinction late.

The translation has to be independent

The New Zealand authorities expect the translation to come from a party with no interest in the application. That is to say, you cannot translate your own document, and nor can a relative. The condition is not about command of the language but about impartiality, and there are few exceptions to it. That the identity of the translator must be plain on the document rests on the same reasoning.

The statement added to the translation must carry the name and contact details of the party who made it, the date, a signature, and wording confirming that the translation matches the source document. The seals, stamps and annotations on the document are expected to be carried over as well. Summarised translations are not accepted; the full text is what counts.

Where your diploma falls in the local framework

New Zealand defines its levels of education as numbered steps within its own national framework. Which of those steps a diploma from abroad corresponds to is settled by a separate application. That assessment becomes the basis both for migration points and for professional registration, which makes it the most strategic part of the file.

Along with the diploma and the academic transcript, the assessment application asks for the length of the programme, its credit structure and sometimes the course descriptions. The documents may be required to come from the university through an official channel; copies handed over in person are not always enough. Learning this detail at the outset removes a further round.

Routes that run through the employer

A good share of the work visas in New Zealand depend on the employer holding a particular approved status. That means one leg of the application lies entirely in the employer’s hands. The task on your side is to prepare the documents that prove your qualifications, complete and capable of being verified.

Documents of experience are looked at for the range of dates, the job title and the description of duties. Short letters obtained from employers in Türkiye do not meet that expectation. The translation of your social security employment record is the strongest attachment to your file, because it confirms your work history from an independent source.

Keeping a student file in balance

For those going to New Zealand as students the file stands on two legs: academic background and financial capacity. On the academic side, secondary or university documents are asked for together with an academic transcript; bringing an explanation of the marking system into the translation makes sure your average is read correctly. On the financial side, it must be visible whom the money belongs to and how long it has been in the account.

Where a sponsor is used, the sponsor’s identity documents, income documents and the civil registry record showing the family tie go into the file as well. All of these documents have to be prepared to the same standard; if one is missing or presented in a different form, the whole file is weakened.

For students who are minors, a parental consent document and papers on the care arrangements are required in addition. The extent of the authority and the responsibility must be written out plainly in these documents, and must not be narrowed in translation. To settle the scope, you might look over the headings of our services.

The practical problem distance creates

Asking for a document from Türkiye once you have moved to New Zealand goes more slowly than people imagine, because of the geographical distance and the difference in time zones. When correspondence with an institution, an attestation step and delivery time all pile up on one another, a single missing document can cost months. The wisest preparation, then, is to take certified copies of the documents you may need later with you before you set off.

Guessing which documents those might be is not hard: identity and civil status documents, the diploma and academic transcript, the driving licence and any professional documents you hold. None of these goes out of date, so there is no harm in preparing them early. To fix the scope you can send us your documents, and see the cost per page on our price list.

The driving licence holds a special place on that list. Driving is part of daily life in New Zealand, and a certified translation of the Turkish driving licence is required in the process of converting to a local licence. This is the document needed immediately after the move and the one most people leave out of their preparations; without it to hand you will have trouble getting about in your first weeks.

The same logic applies to family members. If your children are to enrol at school, the school will ask for their earlier education records and vaccination documents. Obtaining and translating those documents from Türkiye at a distance is not something that can be dealt with quickly at the start of term.

The details that weaken a file

  • The translation being made by the applicant or a relative.
  • Contact details and a date missing from the statement.
  • The academic transcript sent by hand instead of through an official channel.
  • A missing description of duties in documents of experience.
  • Criminal record and medical documents out of date at the moment of application.

The information on this page sets out the general frame; the authority you apply to may ask for further documents or a different format. Ask the competent authority to confirm matters before you apply.
