Apostille or consular legalisation?

Türkiye has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1985. Where the other country is a party as well, an apostille on the document is enough; where it is not, consular legalisation is required.

Norway is a party to the Hague Convention — an apostille on your documents is enough.

The order matters
  • 01 Obtain the document from the issuing authority The civil registry office, the university, the courthouse — the source document must be an original.
  • 02 Have the apostille or legalisation added The governor's office for administrative documents, the judicial justice commission for judicial ones. This step comes BEFORE the translation.
  • 03 Have the sworn translation made Prepared in line with the statsautorisert translatør regime that applies for Norway.
  • 04 Notarisation, where required If the institution asks for it, the translator's signature is certified by a notary.

Translation languages and rates for Norway

Prices are starting per-page rates on economy delivery. Full list by language pair.

The first surprise met with in preparing documents for Norway usually has to do with the calendar. Because the title of state authorised translator is granted by a demanding examination, in some language pairs very few people hold it. That creates a bottleneck quite apart from the translation work itself: your documents may be ready and you may still have to join a queue. This is what starting early amounts to, in concrete terms, in a Norwegian file.

Getting anywhere without an identity number is hard

Norway issues different identity numbers according to the length of the stay: a temporary number for short stays, a permanent one for settled residence. Which of the two you are given also determines which documents you will be asked for. Applicants tend to realise how much the preparation matters only on discovering that banking, tax and health procedures go nowhere until the number is in hand.

At the registration stage documents of identity and civil status are asked for. These are expected to be in full format, that is, to carry the details of the mother and father and the place of birth. They may also need to be recent; a civil registry extract obtained long in advance can be treated as out of date.

General recognition and professional recognition are not the same thing

In Norway an assessment showing what level of education your diploma broadly corresponds to is one thing, and recognition conferring the right to work in a particular profession is another. The first is used in job applications and for general purposes; the second is compulsory in regulated professions such as healthcare, teaching and engineering.

Their document lists differ as well. The general assessment is in most cases satisfied by the diploma and the academic transcript, whereas professional recognition calls for the curriculum, records of internships, practice hours and, where they exist, documents from the professional body. Starting down the wrong track costs both time and needless translation.

What an employment or residence file is expected to show

In skilled worker applications the terms of the employment contract are examined in detail: the description of duties, the working hours and the pay. Those are the employer’s responsibility, but the documents evidencing your qualifications are yours. The diploma, letters about your experience and any professional certificates must be submitted in full.

What is looked for in experience documents is the range of dates, the job title and a description of the duties. Short letters of reference obtained from employers in Türkiye do not carry that information. A translation of your social security employment record strengthens the file markedly, since it confirms your working history from an independent source.

In family applications it is income and the adequacy of housing that come to the fore. These documents are expected to be current; an income document obtained early may have lost its validity by the moment of application.

The extra documents that working in the north brings with it

Anyone going to work in Norway in sectors such as shipping, energy and fishing is asked for professional certificates, medical reports and safety training documents. In Türkiye these are issued by different institutions, and each has its own route to certification. A single application can mean collecting documents from three or four separate bodies.

In translating these certificates, carrying the technical terms and the validity dates across accurately is critical. The standard a training certificate was issued under, and the date up to which it holds good, turn directly into grounds for acceptance or refusal at the other end.

A driving licence is also among the things often needed. In the process of moving to a local licence in Norway, a certified translation of the Turkish driving licence is asked for; having this document prepared at the outset saves time compared with trying to obtain it remotely after the move.

How to set the timetable

There are two bottlenecks in preparing for Norway: the capacity of authorised translators and the processing times of the institutions. The second is out of your hands, while the first can be managed by planning. Gather the documents and complete the certification step early, and do not leave the translation to the busiest period.

Have the documents that do not go out of date (diploma, academic transcript, course contents) prepared straight away; obtain those that are sensitive to dates (income, criminal record, civil registry) close to the date of application. That distinction lets you build a two-stage plan carrying less risk, rather than a single wave of preparation.

Shortcomings seen most often

  • Trying to register with short-format civil status documents.
  • Applying for the general assessment where professional recognition is what is needed.
  • Course contents translated in summary form.
  • Experience documents carrying no description of duties.
  • Leaving the translation to the final week; the bottleneck in capacity can stretch the time out.

To plan the scope and the timetable together you can send us your documents, and you can see the per-page cost on our rates page. Settling how many copies of each document you need at the outset will also spare you joining a queue and waiting at a later step.

The information on this page gives the general framework; the authority you apply to may ask for further documents or a different format. For the requirements that apply, consult the institution’s current list of papers.
