Which countries accept a Dutch translation?
The same language is subject to a different certification regime from one country to the next. Choose the country your document is going to:
Verbs pushed to the end, and verbs that come apart
In this language the verb of a subordinate clause travels to the end of the sentence, while in a main clause one part of the verb stands near the front and the rest waits at the close. Turkish also places its predicate last, and that very resemblance misleads translators: the two languages do not send the same element to the end. In Turkish the final stack of suffixes carries tense, mood and person; here the trailing part is usually a separable prefix that determines what the verb actually means. Leave it out and the sentence still stands up grammatically, yet it now describes a completely different act.
Compound nouns are written as a single word and build long chains in official prose. Breaking those chains apart with spaces is not merely a spelling slip; it damages the meaning. Text length grows moderately against the Turkish, but because compounds are typeset as one unbroken word they cause wrapping problems in narrow table columns and form fields.
Nor can the difference between northern and southern usage be brushed aside. Across the two official areas in which the same language is used, certain administrative terms diverge; a word that counts as everyday in one reads as dated or overly formal in the other. A terminology choice made without knowing which administrative environment the document is going to gives away at a glance that the text came from a foreign pen.
Errors that keep recurring in translation from Turkish
The commonest error is to render the names of institutions and reference numbers with terms borrowed from neighbouring languages. This country’s administrative vocabulary is its own, and words that look shared with its neighbour very often denote a different procedure altogether.
| Field | Frequent error | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Personal record number | Entering it in the same field as the Turkish national identity number | The municipal registration is refused |
| Surname prefixes | Running the prefix together with the surname | Name ordering and searches break down |
| Diploma level | Ignoring the distinction between a vocational higher school and a university | The recognition assessment comes back negative |
| Address format | Writing the number and postcode in the Turkish order | Correspondence fails to arrive |
The main strands of demand
A migration history built on family ties keeps demand for documents in this language permanently high. The files that arrive most often are birth, marriage, divorce and inheritance records, accompanied by pension and social security correspondence. The second cluster is diploma recognition: higher education certificates, course descriptions and vocational qualifications. The third is logistics and the agricultural trade; for freight moving through the ports we translate bills of lading, customs declarations and phytosanitary certificates. On top of that, software interface and terms of use localisation for technology companies makes up a steady item of work.
Horticulture and greenhouse technology form a speciality of their own in trade with this country. Seed certificates, plant variety registration documents and the technical files for climate control and irrigation systems come through regularly. Giving plant names together with their scientific equivalents in these texts heads off trouble at customs and plant quarantine.
Student mobility is a growing item too. Master’s applications call for an explanation of the marking system alongside the academic transcript; converting the Turkish grading scale into the target scale is not the translator’s job, but the definition of the scale must be carried across in full.
Abbreviations and number fields
The series, volume, family sequence and individual sequence numbers found on Turkish documents have no counterpart in this country’s record-keeping logic. Those fields are not deleted; their headings are explained and the entries carried over exactly as they stand, so that the document can later be verified from Türkiye. Institutional abbreviations are spelled out where they first appear, with the original abbreviation kept in brackets. If the document bears a barcode or a verification code, the translation marks where it sits; the code itself is never retyped in any form, only its presence and position are noted.
Names and dates, down to the detail
The civil registration system holds a separate field for surname prefixes and alphabetises without them. Turkish surnames carry no such prefix, so that field is left empty; for a translator to split the surname is a serious mistake. Because the surname forms used after marriage are recorded separately as well, the maiden name shown in the civil registry record must appear explicitly in the translation.
Dates are written day, month, year and joined with hyphens; when the month is spelled out it begins with a lower-case letter. Place of birth is given as province and district together. Tell us which authority the document is for before you send it, then generate your quote in seconds, or first look over the per-page rates.
The information here is general in nature; the level of attestation required in this language varies with the destination country. The safest course is to ask the relevant office for written confirmation before work begins.
