Apostille or consular legalisation?
Türkiye has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1985. Where the other country is a party as well, an apostille on the document is enough; where it is not, consular legalisation is required.
The form of certification for the UAE may have changed recently. Confirm against the official list before you apply; consular legalisation applies where it is still required.

- 01 Obtain the document from the issuing authority The civil registry office, the university, the courthouse — the source document must be an original.
- 02 Have the apostille or legalisation added The governor's office for administrative documents, the judicial justice commission for judicial ones. This step comes BEFORE the translation.
- 03 Have the sworn translation made Prepared in line with the translator licensed by the Ministry of Justice regime that applies for the UAE.
- 04 Notarisation, where required If the institution asks for it, the translator's signature is certified by a notary.

Division of labour: what is done in Türkiye, what is done there
Planning a United Arab Emirates file rests on a single distinction: the official Arabic translation is expected to be produced on the ground, by a licensed translator. That does not mean there is nothing to be done in Türkiye – quite the opposite, the preparation done here decides the fate of the file. What has to be done in Türkiye is to obtain the original of the document, to complete the attestation chain without gaps and, where necessary, to prepare an English set.
A common mistake is to have an Arabic translation made directly in Türkiye and to assume it will be valid everywhere. If the document is going into an official procedure, it may have to be translated again there, and you pay twice. For employer correspondence, preliminary assessment and some private sector processes, on the other hand, an English set prepared here does the job more than adequately.
That is why the first thing we ask in our opening conversation is at what stage the document will be submitted, and to whom. Depending on the answer, we either build the attestation chain and prepare the English set only, or arrange the whole of the preparation so that it lays the ground for the Arabic translation to be made on the spot.
Free zone or mainland?
The country’s most distinctive feature is that procedures run under two different regimes. Structures set up in the free zones answer to their own authorities; structures set up on the mainland work to the regime of the local authorities. This duality feeds straight into what is expected of documents: the same company document may be accepted in a free zone with a simple attestation, while a procedure on the mainland may call for a full Arabic translation and further attestation.
The same distinction holds on the employment side. Which regime you will be working under can change the form in which your diploma and experience documents are attested. When an employer hands you a list of documents it usually does not say which regime applies; you need to ask that outright, because it sets the direction of the preparation.
Practice can differ between the emirates as well. A file that passes without trouble in one emirate may meet a request for further documents in another; rather than a general-purpose list, work from the list your own counterpart gives you.
Is English enough?
Since day-to-day business life runs largely in English, this question comes up constantly. The practical distinction is this: private sector correspondence, employer files and a great many corporate processes go ahead on English documents. Official registration, court and government procedures, by contrast, expect Arabic. For anything that falls between the two, the decision rests with the institution, and proceeding on assumption is risky.
In practice the most efficient method is to have the English set of the document prepared here and, when Arabic is needed, to build on that set. The preliminary stages then move quickly, and you have a consistent source in hand at the official stage. Seeing the per-page rates for each language direction at the outset makes it easier to decide which set to have prepared.
Documents and expectations by purpose
| Purpose | Documents | Expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Work | Diploma, experience certificates, registry record | The attestation chain must be complete; an Arabic translation may be required on the spot |
| Family residence | Marriage and birth certificates | The family tie must be established through documents, without a break |
| Education | Diploma, academic transcript | Recognition and equivalence is a separate application |
| Company matters | Registry record, articles of association, power of attorney | Free zone and mainland expectations differ |
| Property | Power of attorney, identity documents | The transaction must be named explicitly in the power of attorney |
Order and preparation
- Obtain the original of the document; do not start from a copy.
- Complete the attestation chain; this step comes before translation.
- Ask the employer or the counterpart which regime the procedure will run under.
- Have the English set prepared here; if Arabic is needed, have it completed on the spot.
- In family files, keep the spelling of names constant across every document.
Because the form of attestation may have changed in recent years, we advise confirming the current position from an official source before you apply; that is what the notice at the top of the page is for. Upload your documents and let us plan together which step is done here and which on the spot.
Everyday matters once you have settled in
The second wave, which begins once your residence identity card comes through, runs in a more scattered way than the first file: driving licence formalities, opening a bank account, enrolling a child at school, tenancy agreements. Each of these calls for its own documents and is usually left to the last minute, because nobody plans this stage in advance.
On the driving licence, the common mistake is to take translation and exchange to be the same thing. A translation shows what the document says; exchange is a separate administrative procedure with conditions of its own. Learning those conditions, which vary from country to country, in advance also saves needless translation costs.
School enrolment calls for documents showing the child’s previous schooling, and for health records. Having these prepared before you leave Türkiye is far easier than trying to obtain them remotely afterwards; and since school terms do not wait, timing is critical.
So when you are planning a move, we suggest drawing up not only the visa file but also a list of the documents you will need in the first months. A set prepared in one go is both more consistent and cheaper per page.
The account below sets out typical practice; each consulate applies its own current guidance. Because practice can change, work to the requirement in force at the time you apply.
