Document Translation for Italy
For education applications a Dichiarazione di valore obtained from the Italian consulate is usually essential; a translation on its own is not enough.
Certification regime
Which translations does Italy accept?
A translator authorised by a court or a ministry is required. For a translation made in Türkiye to be valid in Italy, it has to be prepared in line with that regime.

Apostille or consular legalisation?
Türkiye has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1985. Where the other country is a party as well, an apostille on the document is enough; where it is not, consular legalisation is required.
Italy is a party to the Hague Convention — an apostille on your documents is enough.

- 01 Obtain the document from the issuing authority The civil registry office, the university, the courthouse — the source document must be an original.
- 02 Have the apostille or legalisation added The governor's office for administrative documents, the judicial justice commission for judicial ones. This step comes BEFORE the translation.
- 03 Have the sworn translation made Prepared in line with the traduzione giurata (asseverazione) regime that applies for Italy.
- 04 Notarisation, where required If the institution asks for it, the translator's signature is certified by a notary.

On education applications to Italy, the commonest and costliest mistake is realising too late that the translation on its own is not enough. The Italian system wants to see, in a document of its own, what a foreign diploma actually means in the country that issued it. That document is separate from the translation, separate from certification too, and it generally comes into play at the consular stage.
The declaration of value: Italy’s distinguishing requirement
A declaration of value, setting out which level of education the diploma corresponds to, how many years of study lie behind it and whether the awarding institution is recognised in its own country, is the backbone of the file at most Italian universities. The translation does not stand in its place; on the contrary, the translation has to be finished before the declaration can be drawn up. Applications that get the order the wrong way round can lose an academic term.
Some universities will accept, in place of the declaration of value, a comparative assessment report from a recognised centre. Which of the two is wanted varies with the university and the programme, and having both prepared creates cost for nothing. Do not settle the scope of the translation until you have established, from your letter of admission or the application page, which one is being asked for.
For that document to be drawn up, the academic transcript has to be submitted alongside the diploma, and in some cases the secondary school diploma and the central examination result as well. In other words, the assumption that “having the diploma translated will do” almost never proves right in Italy. Casting the scope widely from the start is both quicker and cheaper than having further documents translated in a second round.
The order of steps in an education application
| Order | Step | Why at this point |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Preliminary university registration and choice of programme | Which documents are wanted is settled by the programme |
| 2 | Obtaining the originals of the diploma and academic transcript | Every later step rests on the original document |
| 3 | Obtaining the certification annotation | It has to be completed before the translation |
| 4 | Translation into Italian | A precondition for the declaration of value application |
| 5 | The consular stage and the declaration of value | The point at which the file is completed |
The residence permit runs on a separate timetable
Once you have entered Italy, the residence permit application is expected within a short period, and that window is easily missed amid the excitement of the journey. The application file calls for a tenancy agreement, health insurance and evidence of financial means. Income or bank documents brought from Türkiye may come round again at this stage; keeping a certified copy of each with you will see you through.
The classic mistake at this stage is to ask for the necessary documents from Türkiye after arriving in Italy. Obtaining documents at a distance, together with the chain of certification and translation, takes weeks, and the application window may close in the meantime. Working out before you set off which documents might be wanted, and taking certified copies with you, is the preparation that pays off most in Italy.
In employment and family applications it is the civil status documents that come to the fore. Marriage and birth certificates are expected in full format, and where a divorce is involved the whole of the judgment is expected to have been translated. Translating the operative part alone is a shortcoming the Italian authorities come across often.
It should also be borne in mind that administrative business in Italy moves at different speeds from one region to another. Offices in the large cities carry a markedly heavier load than those in smaller places. This does not change the list of documents, but it does change the timetable; the same procedure may take very different lengths of time to conclude in different cities.
Practising a profession, and recognition files
To work in Italy in professions such as medicine, nursing, architecture and engineering, registration with the relevant professional body is needed as well as recognition of the diploma. These files call for the curriculum, internship periods and documents evidencing professional experience, and the volume climbs well beyond the diploma. A full rather than a summary translation of the course contents reduces the risk of something being found wanting when the body reviews the file. For files of that size, you can look over the scope of our services to establish the extent and the cost in advance.
Typical mistakes that hold a file up
- Learning of the declaration of value requirement only after applying.
- Obtaining the certification annotation after the translation.
- Course credits and length of study carried across incompletely in the academic transcript.
- Booking the consular appointment before the documents are ready.
- Having only one copy made; the university, the consulate and the immigration procedures each ask for their own.
How early to start
There is the question of the integrity of the file as well. Italian institutions want to see the translation not as a sheet of paper separate from the source document but as a whole bound to it. The order of the pages, the numbering and which translation belongs to which document must be beyond dispute. With academic transcripts running to several pages, keeping that integrity can decide between acceptance and refusal.
In Italy the academic calendar and the consular appointment calendar run independently of one another, and when the two collide it is the applicant who is squeezed. The safe approach is to obtain the originals of the diploma and academic transcript before the university application period opens, complete the certification step and keep the translation ready. Then, the moment the offer arrives, only the last link is left. For bulky course content files you can look at our rates to see the cost in advance, and send us your documents to settle the scope.
The account below summarises typical practice; each consulate applies its own current guidance. Ask the competent authority to confirm before you apply.
