Criminal Record Certificate Translation for Italy
Residence (permesso di soggiorno), certain professional and citizenship applications in Italy may call for a criminal record certificate showing your history in Türkiye; the recipient is usually the Questura or the relevant administrative office. This page deals only with the translation of the criminal record certificate; for which document is required in which application, and for Italy’s general regime, see our country guide. What sets Italy apart is that the translation may be expected in the form of a sworn translation (asseverazione).

The Turkish document in the Questura context
Italy’s own record system is the casellario giudiziale; the document submitted to show a history in Türkiye, however, is the Turkish criminal record certificate, and it is presented under that identity in Questura procedures. Equating the Turkish document with an Italian casellario document would be wrong: it is a Turkish criminal record certificate, with a parenthetical explanation added where one is needed. Since the document is read alongside the application file and the passport, the spelling of your name must be consistent; the translation carries identity details across without interpreting them. Turkish special characters are transliterated in line with the spelling in the passport.
The distinction between the record and the archive record
In Türkiye the document can be obtained either as a criminal record certificate or as a criminal record archive certificate; the two cover different ground, and some Italian authorities ask for the archive certificate, which shows the history in full. The translation states correctly, by name, which type the document is; translating an archive certificate merely as a “criminal record” misrepresents its scope. Confirming in advance which type is wanted keeps you from having the wrong document translated.
The “no record” statement is the substance of the document
In most cases the only substantive information a criminal record certificate carries is whether or not the person has a record. The statement that there is no criminal record is the substance of the document and is translated plainly and in full; in Italian it is met by a phrase along the lines of “nessun precedente”, but the translation conveys what the document says and adds no interpretation of its own. Where there is a record, every line, the nature of the offence, the decision and the date, is reproduced exactly; no section is summarised.
Traduzione giurata (asseverazione)
Italy operates a sworn translator system; a translation submitted for official purposes may have to take the form of a sworn translation made before a court in Italy (traduzione giurata / asseverazione). A translation produced in Türkiye follows a different chain: a sworn translator signs it, a notary notarises it, and an apostille is attached. Confirm with the authority that will receive your document whether it is to be prepared through asseverazione in Italy or through the Türkiye chain. On an e-Devlet printout, the QR code is indicated with [QR code] and [e-signature verification] notes; no attempt is made to decode the contents of the code.
If there is a record: getting the legal terms right
Where the document does contain a record, each entry is translated so that its legal meaning survives; concepts such as a judicial fine, imprisonment, a suspended sentence or the deferral of the announcement of the verdict are not equated one to one with an institution of Italian law. Turning a Turkish sentence directly into an Italian offence category steers the authority towards a false equivalence; the sound approach is to translate the concept faithfully and add a parenthetical explanation where necessary. The nature of the offence, the relevant statutory provision, the decision and the date are carried across as they stand. Any wording on the restoration of forfeited rights or on the deletion of the record is translated too, without omission, because such wording shows the current legal status of the record. The Italian authority making the assessment draws its own conclusions about the weight of the record from this raw information; the job of the translation is not interpretation but complete and accurate conveyance. Where a record has several entries, each one is translated separately and in order; merging or summarising entries can make the record look narrower or broader than it is and undermines the credibility of the document. Since the Italian authority may ask for the detail of the record, translating every line in full and in sequence means that request can be met without delay.
| Element of the document | How it appears in the translation |
|---|---|
| Issuing authority heading | With a descriptive rendering; the name of the authority is kept |
| Type of document (record / archive record) | Stated correctly by name; the scope is not altered |
| The “no record” outcome | Conveyed plainly and in full |
| Identity details | Exactly as they stand; the name must match the passport |
| QR code / e-signature | With a [QR code] / [e-signature verification] note |
Currency, the apostille and the order of certification
A criminal record certificate shows a state of affairs on a given date, and many Italian authorities expect a recently issued copy. The translation reproduces the date of issue exactly and cannot bring an old document up to date. Before you submit:
- Check that the “no record” statement has been translated plainly.
- Confirm whether the translation is to be prepared by asseverazione or through the Türkiye chain.
- Have the document translated while it is fresh; obtain the apostille before the translation.
Italy is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention; check the current position on the official HCCH list. You can see the level of certification other documents require on our document types page, review the cost on our pricing page, and upload your document for a quote. Translations are handled from our single office in Ankara Kızılay. Acceptance conditions differ from one authority to another, so ask for confirmation in advance.
