Apostille or consular legalisation?
Türkiye has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1985. Where the other country is a party as well, an apostille on the document is enough; where it is not, consular legalisation is required.
Serbia is a party to the Hague Convention — an apostille on your documents is enough.

- 01 Obtain the document from the issuing authority The civil registry office, the university, the courthouse — the source document must be an original.
- 02 Have the apostille or legalisation added The governor's office for administrative documents, the judicial justice commission for judicial ones. This step comes BEFORE the translation.
- 03 Have the sworn translation made Prepared in line with the sudski prevodilac regime that applies for Serbia.
- 04 Notarisation, where required If the institution asks for it, the translator's signature is certified by a notary.

Two alphabets, one name: the first hurdle in a Serbian file
Serbian is written in both the Cyrillic and the Latin alphabet, and official documents are drawn up sometimes in one, sometimes in the other. For applicants coming from Türkiye that creates a concrete problem: when your name appears in Cyrillic on one document and in Latin letters on another, the two records do not match automatically. The institution may resolve this of its own accord, but it is under no obligation to; where it does not, it asks you for a document explaining the discrepancy.
The soundest way to decide which alphabet to have the translation made in is to follow the writing used by the institution you will submit it to. If you already hold a Serbian document issued earlier, taking the spelling of your name there as the reference settles the confusion at the outset. Where different spellings will necessarily be used side by side, making both forms visible in the translation makes the official’s job easier.
Visa-free entry and a long stay are not the same thing
The ease Turkish citizens find on short-term entry to Serbia is taken to hold good for long stays as well, and that is one of the most expensive misunderstandings there is. Stays beyond a certain length, and every case where the purpose is work or study, call for an application for temporary residence; that application has a document set of its own and translation requirements of its own. Starting out on a tourist entry and trying to put the process right afterwards usually means leaving the country and beginning again.
This is why your purpose has to be defined correctly from the start. If you are going for work, the employment contract and professional documents; for study, the diploma and the letter of acceptance; for family reunification, the civil registry documents that establish the family tie sit at the centre of the file.
Company and investment files
Serbia is a frequent choice of address in the regional structuring of Turkish companies, so demand for commercial document translation runs as heavily as for individual files. The documents wanted for company formation, branch registration and tender files are standard: the trade registry record, documents evidencing signing authority, the articles of association and the power of attorney. The real risk here lies not in the quality of the translation but in how current the documents are and in the scope of the power of attorney.
If the name of the transaction to be carried out does not appear plainly in the power of attorney, your representative cannot carry it out, and no translation can close that gap. Going over the wording of the power of attorney with your local counterpart before it is executed at the notary therefore comes far cheaper than drawing up a fresh one later. Company names, for their part, are not translated but carried across as they stand; abbreviations of legal form are explained in brackets where necessary.
Document sets by purpose
| Purpose | Documents | Point to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Work | Contract, diploma, professional documents | The employer starts the process and the timetable is not flexible |
| Study | Diploma, academic transcript, letter of acceptance | The recognition application runs separately |
| Temporary residence | Accommodation, subsistence and insurance documents | Short-lived documents should be left to the end |
| Family | Marriage and birth certificates | Consistency of alphabet must hold across the whole set |
| Commerce | Registry record, signing authority, power of attorney | Currency and scope are decisive |
Order and timing
- Obtain the original of the document; do not start with a photocopy.
- Complete the chain of certification before the translation.
- Have the translation made in the alphabet the institution uses.
- Prepare short-lived documents close to the date of the application.
- Check the dates and the scope of authority on company documents.
The translation step is completed in a few working days depending on the number of pages; what stretches the process out is obtaining the documents and corresponding with the institution. Upload your file and let us settle the scope together; you can also see the per-page rates from the outset.
Recognition of diplomas and professional registration
The recognition procedure run so that a Turkish diploma can be used in Serbia is a matter separate from translation, with a timetable of its own. The assessment compares the length of study, the credit load and the content of the programme; the strength of the file therefore gathers in the course descriptions rather than in the academic transcript. The descriptions need to be obtained from the university under seal, rather than settling for a printout downloaded from the internet.
In regulated professions there is one stage more: once academic recognition has been granted, registration with the relevant professional body is required, and that registration calls for documents of its own. Taking the two stages for a single procedure delays the start of work unexpectedly. In healthcare and engineering, learning the distinction at the outset is better than rebuilding the whole timetable.
Documents of experience matter more than is supposed. The social security employment record, reference letters and insurance records say what a diploma on its own cannot: what work you actually did. In these documents, the job title matching the one in the contract is decisive for the internal consistency of the file.
One last reminder: translations submitted to a recognition file are generally not returned. If you are going to use the same documents for another institution as well, state the number of copies you need with your first request. Producing a second copy of a single document afterwards is both slower and, page for page, dearer than preparing it together with the whole set.
This content is for information; the country’s practice on apostille or consular legalisation may change. The final requirement is set by the authority to which the application is made; confirm it in advance.
