Consular Legalisation
Certification carried out by the consulate of the destination country so that a document is recognised there.
Where the destination country does not operate under the Hague Apostille Convention, consular legalisation is used in place of an apostille. The document is first certified by the relevant domestic authorities and then legalised by the destination country’s mission.
Consular legalisation is usually the last link in a chain, and the translation is expected to have been prepared by a sworn translator and, where required, notarised beforehand. Because each country’s mission may apply its own procedure and order of documents, planning the route correctly from the start avoids lost time.
