Apostille
The international certificate issued under the Hague Apostille Convention so that an official document is recognised in another country.
An apostille confirms, in a single standard certificate, that the signature and seal of the issuing authority are genuine; the document can then be recognised in signatory countries without separate consular legalisation. Whether the certificate is valid depends on whether the country concerned is a party to the convention.
The point that matters for translation is that whether the apostille goes on the document or on the translation varies with the procedure. Our detailed guide sets out the process step by step, along with the points to watch.
