Apostille or consular legalisation?
Türkiye has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1985. Where the other country is a party as well, an apostille on the document is enough; where it is not, consular legalisation is required.
the United Kingdom is a party to the Hague Convention — an apostille on your documents is enough.

- 01 Obtain the document from the issuing authority The civil registry office, the university, the courthouse — the source document must be an original.
- 02 Have the apostille or legalisation added The governor's office for administrative documents, the judicial justice commission for judicial ones. This step comes BEFORE the translation.
- 03 Have the sworn translation made Prepared in line with the certified translation regime that applies for the United Kingdom.
- 04 Notarisation, where required If the institution asks for it, the translator's signature is certified by a notary.

With translations sent to the United Kingdom, success or failure usually shows not in the language of the translation but in what the statement accompanying it contains. The immigration authority looks for particular elements in that statement, and if one of them is missing the translation counts as invalid. The good news is that those elements are known, and set out correctly from the start they carry the process through without trouble.
The elements expected in the statement
In files sent from Türkiye the point missed most often is that the statement is written incompletely. All of the elements below are expected to appear in the same statement; the absence of any one of them can be grounds for refusing the file.
| Element | Why it is looked for |
|---|---|
| A declaration that the translation is a true and complete rendering of the source document | Ties responsibility to the party who made the translation |
| The date of translation | Shows that the document is current |
| The full name of the person or organisation that made the translation | Needed so that verification can be carried out |
| Contact details | Used to confirm the matter where necessary |
| A signature | Makes the statement legally binding |
The statement also has to be written in the target language. A statement of accuracy drawn up in Turkish does not do its job alongside an English translation. The point looks simple, yet in practice it is frequently overlooked.
A separate statement is expected for each document as well. A single blanket statement covering five different documents may not be treated as sufficient, because it does not show which document corresponds to which translation. Submitting every translation with its own statement, its own date and its own signature is the safest course.
Which documents come to the fore in which application
In student applications, academic history and financial standing are assessed together. In work applications the documents supplied by the employer and the documents evidencing your qualifications complement one another. In family and spouse applications the weight shifts to proving the relationship and the income; there the number of documents can climb well above the other categories.
The most laborious part of a family application is the financial paperwork. Bank statements, payslips and employer letters have to cover a given period without a break. All of these documents, drawn up in Turkish, have to be translated; a selective translation counts as incomplete, since it cannot show that the period is unbroken. The page count rises quickly here, so it is worth looking at our rates page to see the budget in advance.
In student applications it is the offer letter issued by the institution that carries the process, but proof of financial standing remains your own responsibility. Documents relating to your bank accounts in Türkiye are expected to be translated in a way that shows whose the account is and that the money has been sitting there for a given length of time. Where a sponsor is involved, the sponsor’s identity documents and proof of relationship go into the file too.
Another detail with these documents is that the currency and the amounts are carried across exactly as they stand. Rounding the figures in translation or converting them into another currency is not expected; whatever the document says is what goes over. Working out the conversion is the institution’s job.
Academic recognition is a heading of its own
The assessment that shows what your diploma is worth in the United Kingdom is a process independent of the immigration application, and it usually calls for a separate set of documents. Employers and universities may ask for that assessment, while the immigration authority looks at the matter through a different frame. Taking the two for one file leaves gaps on both sides.
In assessment applications, the length of the programme, its credit structure and the course descriptions may be asked for alongside the diploma and the academic transcript. Requested from the university in Türkiye, these documents take time to prepare, so the process has to be set in motion early.
In regulated professions a third layer comes into play: registration with the professional body itself. To work in fields such as health, law and accountancy you have to be registered with the relevant body, and what that body expects by way of documents differs both from the immigration authority and from the recognition organisation. Planning the three lines separately produces results far more quickly than trying to satisfy all three with a single file.
The details that weaken a file
- A statement written with elements missing, or left in Turkish.
- Only part of the bank statements translated.
- Seals, stamps and handwritten notes on the document not carried across.
- A translation made in summary form; the full text is expected.
- The spelling of the name not matching between the passport and the documents.
Timing
Because the application appointment and the biometrics are tied to fixed dates, preparation has to be built backwards from them. Since the period covered by the financial documents has to be valid at the moment of application, refreshing those documents at the last step makes sense. To settle the scope together, you can send us your documents.
Academic documents, on the other hand, do not go out of date and can be prepared at the very start. Drawing that distinction lets you build a two-stage, less risky plan instead of one single wave of preparation: the fixed documents first, the date-sensitive ones last. That way, if the appointment is brought forward or put back, you are not left preparing the whole file again.
The account below summarises typical practice; each consulate applies its own current guidance. We advise checking the latest position with the authority that will handle the matter.
