What this application usually calls for
The final list varies with the institution’s own announcement; the set below is a starting point.
UKVI reads the file as a whole
Family visa applications in the United Kingdom are judged less on whether the individual documents are there than on how convincing the file is taken together. The application is completed online, a biometric appointment is booked, and the documents are uploaded digitally. The caseworker taking the decision ticks off separately the genuineness of the relationship, whether the income condition is met, the suitability of the accommodation and the language requirement. Where any one of these items goes unmet the file is refused in its entirety; making the shortfall good afterwards is generally not on offer. In United Kingdom files, then, the preparation has to be finished before the application is sent.
The income condition requires a particular threshold to be evidenced over a particular period and in particular document formats. Because the threshold and the accepted formats have changed over time, reading the current guidance before applying is essential; that guidance runs to such detail as which month’s payslip has to line up with which bank statement.
No sworn translator, but a statement of accuracy
There is no sworn translator system in the United Kingdom. What the translation placed alongside Turkish documents has to carry is the statement of accuracy of the translator or the agency: a declaration that the translation conforms to the original, the date of translation, and the translator’s name and contact details. If one of these elements is missing the translation may be treated as invalid. Membership of a professional body is not compulsory, though it adds confidence. Every page of the document is expected to be translated, reverse sides and the text of seals included.
| Head of assessment | How it is evidenced |
|---|---|
| Genuineness of the relationship | Marriage record, evidence of a shared life and of contact |
| Income condition | Payslips, bank statements, a letter from the employer |
| Accommodation | Tenancy agreement or title deed, number of rooms |
| Language requirement | An accepted test result or an exemption |
The most frequent ground for refusal
The most widespread ground of refusal on family visas is that the income documents are not presented in the form the guidance calls for. Even where the income is sufficient, the file is refused if the payslip periods do not overlap with the bank statement periods, or if the employer’s letter does not contain the information asked for. The second frequent ground is evidence of the genuineness of the relationship that stays on the surface; submitting the marriage certificate alone is not thought sufficient. The third is the absence of a statement of accuracy on the translations. With civil registry extracts going from Türkiye, failure to translate the whole of the document is a shortcoming met often.
Is an apostille needed
At the visa application stage an apostille is more often than not left unasked for on Turkish civil registry documents; what is really expected is that the document came from an official body and has been translated properly. Where you are to marry in the United Kingdom, on the other hand, or to use the document in a court or registry procedure, an apostille may be required. The two should not be run together. You will find which certification applies to which document on our document page, and how this differs from countries that have a sworn system in our country guide.
A marriage contracted in Türkiye, and consistency of names
A marriage contracted in Türkiye is generally accepted as valid in the United Kingdom; no separate recognition procedure is needed. What matters is what the marriage certificate tells the caseworker: the date and place of the marriage and the identity details of the parties have to be plainly legible. Even a marriage certificate obtained in the international form may count as deficient in the file without an English translation; the whole document, seals and endorsement texts included, is expected to be translated.
Consistency of names is a subject of its own. Where the spelling in the passport differs from the spelling in the civil registry documents, the caseworker is left unable to be sure that the two documents belong to the same person. If a surname changed on marriage, the document showing that change has to be in the file. Keeping the name in the translation as it stands in the source, and noting the passport spelling as well, heads off a request for explanation.
In applications for children, the birth certificate is expected to show both parents. Turkish birth certificates carry that information, but submitting it together with the civil registry extract makes the tie plainer still. Where there is a custody judgment, it is translated in full, along with the endorsement of finality; carrying across only the operative part leaves the file incomplete and prompts a request for further documents.
The road from a visa to settled status
A family visa is generally granted for a fixed period, and an extension application is made when it runs out; at every extension the income and relationship conditions are evidenced afresh. Once a certain length of time has built up, an application for indefinite leave to remain comes onto the agenda, and at that stage tests of language and of knowledge of life in the country are added. Because it is a long chain, keeping the documents in good order from the very start is a real advantage.
In applications for children, custody and the consent of the other parent are examined separately; the translation of the divorce decree and the custody ruling is the bulkiest part of these files. Since court judgments run to a high page count, if you want to see the cost in advance you can look at our pricing page and upload your documents to request a quotation.
The account here summarises typical practice; every consulate applies its own current guidance. Establishing at the outset the form the institution wants saves doing the work twice.
