Simultaneous Interpreting
Spoken interpreting in which the interpreter renders the speaker into the target language almost in real time, as the speech continues.
In simultaneous interpreting the interpreter usually works from a sound-insulated booth, listening through headphones and delivering the rendering into a microphone as it happens, while the audience follows on their own headsets. Because the cognitive load is heavy, interpreters normally work in rotating pairs.
International conferences, large panels and multilingual sessions are the typical setting. The flow of the speech is never broken, so the event does not run long; in exchange, technical infrastructure – booth, headsets and a sound system – is required.
