Literary translation asks for more than carrying across the meaning of words: the writer’s voice, rhythm and imagery have to be recreated in another language. What matters here is not a word-for-word equivalent but preserving the effect the text has on its reader.
The rhyme of a poem, the tone of a novel, the irony of an essay – these survive in the target language only through inventive solutions. Literary translation therefore puts a premium on native-level command of the target language and on the translator’s ear for literature.
