Notarised translation
Document Translation for Portugal
There is no sworn translator system; the translation is certified by a notary, a lawyer or a consulate.

Apostille or consular legalisation?
Türkiye has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1985. Where the other country is a party as well, an apostille on the document is enough; where it is not, consular legalisation is required.
Portugal is a party to the Hague Convention — an apostille on your documents is enough.

- 01 Obtain the document from the issuing authority The civil registry office, the university, the courthouse — the source document must be an original.
- 02 Have the apostille or legalisation added The governor's office for administrative documents, the judicial justice commission for judicial ones. This step comes BEFORE the translation.
- 03 Have the sworn translation made Prepared in line with the tradução certificada regime that applies for Portugal.
- 04 Notarisation, where required If the institution asks for it, the translator's signature is certified by a notary.

Portugal has become, over the past few years, one of the destinations where applications from Türkiye have risen fastest. Remote workers, people planning their retirement and those hoping to settle by way of investment all turned to the same offices at once. The upshot is document lists that keep growing and administrative appointments that stretch further out. In conditions like these, the quality of your preparation decides how long the whole thing takes you.
Do not let the chain of certification break
The difficulty peculiar to Portugal is that who confers official standing on a translation varies with the document and with the institution. The same paper may pass on a single approval in one procedure and be asked for a further layer of certification in another. Flexible though this looks, in practice it breeds uncertainty: not knowing in advance which layer is required, the applicant ends up with either too little approval or too much.
The right approach is to ask the receiving institution in writing what it expects of the translation, and to build the chain to fit that answer. The order of the chain matters as well: certification of the source document has to be completed before the translation is made. An endorsement added afterwards will not appear in the translation, so the file counts as incomplete and the process starts over.
| Document | Where it comes to the fore | Point to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Birth certificate | Tax number, residence, family matters | Must be in the full format, with the mother’s and father’s names showing |
| Criminal record certificate | Residence applications | Has to be recent, so do not obtain it too early |
| Income and bank documents | Passive income and remote worker applications | It must be apparent that the regular income continues over time |
| Diploma and academic transcript | Education and professional applications | An explanation of the grading system should be added |
| Marriage certificate | Family reunification | Where there has been a divorce, the judgment is wanted in full |
Why income documents carry so much weight
A good share of the routes used to settle in Portugal rest on showing that you can support yourself. That puts financial papers at the centre of the file: bank statements, income letters, documents evidencing rental or investment income. Drawn up in Turkish, they have to be translated so that the amounts, the dates and the nature of each item of income come through unmistakably.
The common mistake here is having only the last page of the statement translated. The institution wants to see that the income continues; a single monthly snapshot shows nothing of the sort. Translating the whole of the statement for the period makes the file markedly more convincing. Since that pushes the page count up, you can look at our price list if you would like to plan the cost in advance.
The tax number is the first link in the chain
In Portugal almost every procedure is tied to a personal tax number. Signing a tenancy agreement, opening a bank account, taking out a phone line, applying for residence – none of it moves without that number. Identity and address documents are asked for when you obtain it, and this is where papers brought from Türkiye face their first test.
What the chain means in practice is this: a small gap at the first step puts off the next four or five all at once. The preparation that pays off most for anyone planning to settle is to have certified translations of identity and civil status documents ready before leaving for the country. These papers will be asked for again and again at the stages that follow.
A separate warning if you mean to use a power of attorney: the scope of the authority given to whoever will act for you in Portugal has to be itemised. Where powers such as obtaining a tax number, opening an account and signing contracts are not written out expressly, an obstacle appears in the middle of the procedure.
The reality of appointments and waiting
Immigration and residence procedures in Portugal are heavily subscribed, so waiting times vary and cannot be guessed at from outside. The one variable you can influence is having the file complete when your turn comes. A procedure put off because a document is missing usually turns into a loss measured not in weeks but in months.
A practical precaution: sort the documents into two groups. Have the ones that do not go stale (diploma, academic transcript, birth certificate) prepared straight away; obtain the ones that have to be recent (criminal record certificate, income documents) once the appointment date is known. That division heads off both needless repetition and the last-minute rush.
What sends a file back
- Certification and translation set up in the wrong order.
- Only part of the bank statements translated.
- A criminal record certificate that has gone stale by the time of the application.
- An attempt to proceed on short-format civil status documents.
- Family members’ documents prepared at different times and to different degrees of completeness.
Getting started
The greatest advantage in the Portuguese process is starting early. Working out which documents your own goal calls for, settling the list and then preparing everything in one go takes far less time than moving piece by piece. To draw the list up together, you can send us your documents.
Education runs on a line of its own. Applicants to Portuguese universities are asked, alongside the diploma and academic transcript, for the length of the programme and an explanation of the grading system. The Turkish grading scale has no direct counterpart, so getting that explanation into the translation in full is what allows your average to be read correctly. Anyone thinking of working after graduation should plan the recognition of the diploma separately from residence procedures; the two run through different institutions and on different timetables.
One last reminder: when you scan your documents to send them, include the reverse sides, the endorsements and the QR codes. Institutions in Portugal want to see the document whole, and a page scanned incompletely can lead to the entire file being asked for again.
The account below summarises typical practice; every consulate applies its own current guidance. It is as well to check the requirements in force from an official source.
