Apostille or consular legalisation?
Türkiye has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1985. Where the other country is a party as well, an apostille on the document is enough; where it is not, consular legalisation is required.
Georgia is a party to the Hague Convention — an apostille on your documents is enough.

- 01 Obtain the document from the issuing authority The civil registry office, the university, the courthouse — the source document must be an original.
- 02 Have the apostille or legalisation added The governor's office for administrative documents, the judicial justice commission for judicial ones. This step comes BEFORE the translation.
- 03 Have the sworn translation made Prepared in line with the ნოტარიულად დამოწმებული თარგმანი regime that applies for Georgia.
- 04 Notarisation, where required If the institution asks for it, the translator's signature is certified by a notary.

A system that moves fast, but forgives nothing missing
The speed of administrative business in Georgia is the first thing that catches the eye of anyone arriving from Türkiye: a great many formalities can be completed at one counter and in a short time. That speed creates a misleading sense of ease. A fast system does not wait; if a document is missing at the moment you apply, the matter is not concluded and you join the queue again. In other words, whoever arrives poorly prepared loses no less time than in a slow system.
The strategy for Georgian files is therefore a simple one: finish everything before you travel. With the original document, the certification annotation and the translation ready in hand, the business is usually done in a single visit. Go with something missing and you are left either returning to Türkiye or trying to obtain documents from a distance.
When your name passes into the Georgian alphabet
The Georgian alphabet is entirely unlike the Latin or Cyrillic alphabets, and once your name has been carried into it you have no way of checking the spelling by eye. The problem emerges later, when that spelling is converted back into Latin letters in documents issued to you: the return journey does not always give you the spelling in your passport.
The precaution is to settle deliberately on the spelling to be used in the first transaction and then to insist on the same one in every document that follows. If you already hold a Georgian document, we take the spelling in it as our reference. The same rule applies to company names: fixing the name once keeps the registry records and the contracts consistent with one another.
Setting up a company and the investment side
The simplicity of company formation in Georgia is the principal attraction for Turkish entrepreneurs. Getting foreign documents into the system, by contrast, is not equally simple: company documents arriving from abroad are expected to come with the chain of certification and to bear a current date. Documents showing the shareholding structure, the signing authority and the limits of representation form the backbone of this file.
In property transactions the power of attorney is the instrument most often used. The property and the transaction to be carried out have to be defined clearly in it; a power of attorney drafted in general terms may not be accepted at the land registry stage. Since a translation cannot add an authority that is not in the text, this check has to be made before the notary stage.
Two-way planning for students
The number of Turkish students studying in Georgia is high, particularly because of the programmes in health. In these files the outward direction is relatively straightforward: translating the secondary school diploma, the transcript of marks and identity documents is usually enough. The real planning is needed in the return direction.
After graduation, using the diploma in Türkiye depends on a separate recognition process, and that process looks for conditions of its own. Keeping the academic transcripts, course descriptions and placement records you receive throughout your studies in good order is far easier than trying to gather those documents once you have graduated. Translation sets prepared term by term are both quicker and cheaper than having everything translated in one go at graduation.
Transport and border trade documents
The heavy trade that moves across the land border adds to Georgian files a group of documents rarely seen in other countries: transport and customs papers. Authorisation certificates, carriage contracts, insurance policies and product documents all sit within this group. The function of the translation here is to let the official on the other side recognise the document and classify it; what is expected is not elegant language but exact and consistent use of terms.
In product and certificate of origin documents, consistency in the names of the items matters particularly. Where the same product is named differently in different documents, it leads to detailed examination at customs and holds the consignment up. For firms shipping regularly, a term list drawn up once is both quicker and cheaper than commissioning a fresh translation every time.
With driver and vehicle documents, the period of validity is critical. Having a document translated when it is about to expire means repeating the work shortly afterwards; the shipping timetable and the document timetable have to be planned together.
Documents by purpose, and the order to follow
| Purpose | Documents | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Education | Diploma, transcript of marks, identity document | Recognition in the return direction has to be planned from the start |
| Work | Contract, diploma, experience documents | The professional equivalent should be stated plainly |
| Residence | Accommodation, income and health documents | The documents have to bear a current date |
| Family | Marriage and birth certificates | The spelling of names must be kept fixed across the whole set |
| Trade and property | Registry record, signing authority, power of attorney | The power of attorney must name the transaction |
The order is always the same: obtain the original, have the certification annotation added, have the translation done, then set off. Those who complete these four steps before reaching the country can finish most of their business in a single day. Upload your documents and let us see in advance what is missing, so that you can conclude matters in one visit; we will settle the scope of services accordingly.
The account below summarises typical practice; each consulate applies its own current guidance. Where you are in any doubt, it is best to put the question to the institution before you apply.
