Relay Interpreting
Working between languages with no direct interpreter by routing the interpretation through an intermediate language.
Relay interpreting comes into play when no interpreter works directly between the source and target languages. The speech is first rendered into a pivot language; a second interpreter listens to that and carries it into the target language. Spoken interpreting thus becomes possible even in rare pairs.
Multilingual international meetings and sessions involving less widely spoken languages are the typical cases. Because the transfer passes through an extra stage a slight delay can arise, and the accuracy of every step in the pivot language determines the soundness of the whole chain.
