Back-translation
Testing a translation’s accuracy by having a second translator render it back into the source language.
In back-translation the target text is given to a second translator who has not seen the original, and they translate it back into the source language. Comparing the two source texts brings any drift in meaning, and any ambiguity, into view.
The method is used above all in medical research, pharmaceutical documentation and questionnaires, where the smallest shade of meaning counts. The aim is not to polish the text but to verify independently that the translation carries the original meaning in full.
