Court judgments and official notifications

These documents stand apart from the rest, because the whole of the text produces legal effect. Even loosening a phrase in the reasoning of a judgment can affect how it is assessed in the other country.

The course we follow with judicial texts is to preserve both the form and the meaning. Judgment headings, case and decision numbers, the descriptions of the parties and the operative paragraphs are carried across in the order they hold in the source text. Abbreviations are explained but not altered. Notification correspondence calls for similar care. In texts carrying time limits and dates on which rights lapse, a mix-up in the way the day, the month and the year are written can have serious consequences; for that reason we read every line containing a date again as a separate checking step.

Another point frequently raised with judicial files is the order in which the document is to be prepared. Whether the translation is done first or the certification obtained first depends on the type of document and the country it is going to.
