What this application usually calls for
The final list varies with the institution’s own announcement; the set below is a starting point.
Which canton you apply to changes everything
Residence and family reunification decisions in Switzerland are taken not at federal level but at the migration office of the canton where you live. The federal framework is shared, yet the list of documents asked for, the form of the paperwork and even the language the translation is to be made into vary by canton. German is expected in a German-speaking canton, French in cantons such as Geneva or Vaud, and Italian in Ticino. The first step in a Swiss file is therefore not to gather documents but to obtain the document list of the canton you are dealing with; a translation made into the wrong language is void from the start.
The second structural difference is the regime that changes with the spouse’s nationality. Joining a Swiss or an EU-national spouse is not subject to the same conditions as joining a third-country national spouse; in the latter case the examination of housing and income is markedly more detailed.
Marrying in Switzerland: the preparatory file
Couples who are to marry in Switzerland submit a preparatory file to the local civil registry office before the ceremony. That file holds the foreign party’s birth certificate, a civil registry record showing marital status and a document showing that there is no impediment to the marriage. The certificate of capacity to marry obtained in Türkiye serves this purpose. What the office watches for is how current the document is; a registry extract obtained a few months earlier may not be accepted. Where the marriage was contracted in Türkiye, the process of entering it in the Swiss civil register begins instead, and translations of the same documents are called for at that stage as well.
| Stage | Counterpart | Document to the fore |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage preparation | Local civil registry office | Certificate of capacity to marry |
| Residence permit | Cantonal migration office | Income, housing, insurance |
| Family reunification | Cantonal migration office | Civil registry extract and birth certificate |
The most frequent ground of refusal
In family reunification the commonest negative outcome arises from an assessment that the housing is not sufficient for the size of the family, or that the household will become dependent on social assistance. Drawing social assistance in Switzerland bears directly on the renewal of residence; income documents are therefore examined not only for their amount but for continuity. The second frequent problem is that the translation does not carry the certification required: instead of a register of sworn translators, notarisation is the widespread practice in Switzerland, and some cantons want the notarisation done in Switzerland. The third is missing the time limits allowed for family reunification; once the application is late, giving reasons becomes compulsory.
Where translation and certification fit
The order followed is usually this: the document is obtained in Türkiye, the apostille procedure is completed, it is then translated into the language of the target canton, and the translation is certified. Some cantons accept a translation certified in Türkiye, while others expect the translation to be certified in Switzerland; asking about that distinction before you apply saves doing the work twice. You will find the approval each document requires on our document page, and for comparison with countries that have no cantonal division you can look at our country guide.
Registering children and moving canton
When children are brought to Switzerland, the birth certificate and the position on custody are examined together. A parent arriving alone is asked for a document showing that the other parent consents to the child settling abroad; where there has been a divorce, the court judgment regulating custody is added. The time limits allowed for family reunification are shorter for children, and once missed the application has to be justified. A translation of the birth certificate into the language of the canton may also be asked for at school registration.
Moving canton is a separate procedure in itself. Moving from one canton to another in Switzerland does not carry the residence permit over automatically; notification is made to the migration office of the new canton, and for some types of permit the new canton’s approval is looked for. At that stage the file may be reopened and documents already submitted may be asked for in the language of the new canton.
That possibility makes keeping digital copies of your documents, and where you can spare originals, a practical precaution when coming to Switzerland. If the same document has to be translated a second time, having to hand the terms and the spellings of names used in the first translation prevents the two texts from diverging.
The multilingual copy, and some practical advice
Switzerland is among the countries that recognise the multilingual international copy. Obtaining documents such as birth and marriage records in that form in Türkiye can, in at least some cantons, do away with the need for a translation. Court judgments, custody documents and Turkish papers relating to income, however, fall outside its scope. The fields a multilingual copy contains are limited as well; where the detail the canton asks about lies outside those fields, a full translation is called for after all.
One last practical point: residence permits in Switzerland are classified by different letters, and each class carries different rights of renewal, of work and of bringing family. Which type of permit your spouse or your parent holds directly determines the documents that will be asked of you, so the type of the existing permit needs to be established before the file is put together. To work out together which language and which level of approval you need, you can upload your documents and request a quote; for cost by the page, take a look at our pricing page.
This page is intended as guidance; the approval regime of a country and the form of document it asks for can be updated over time. It is as well to check the current requirements from an official source.
