A family reunification application starts at the mission

Long-term family reunification applications for Czechia are generally made by appointment at the Czech mission in Türkiye, and the file is passed on from there to the migration unit of the Ministry of the Interior. In some periods, obtaining an appointment is a stage in itself. After entry into Czechia, biometric data are recorded and a residence card is issued. Two separate bodies are involved throughout: the mission takes in the papers, the decision is made at the ministry. That structure can turn requests for further documents into long exchanges of correspondence.

Where the application is made as the family member of a Czech citizen, a lighter regime applies. Where it is a matter of joining a spouse who is a third-country national, the conditions as to housing, income and health insurance are examined in detail. Establishing at the outset which regime you fall under has a direct effect on the set of documents to be prepared and on the volume of translation.

The ribbon-bound translation: the formal requirement really is enforced

Czechia’s most distinctive feature is how strictly it enforces the requirement as to the physical form of an official translation. The court-appointed translator binds the translation to the source document with a ribbon and seals it, so that the two become a single instrument. Translations handed over as separate sheets, or carrying nothing but a stamp, are not accepted. It is therefore necessary to ask in advance whether a translation made in Türkiye will be accepted in Czechia; in many procedures the translation is required to be made in Czechia by a court-appointed translator.

The commonest causes of refusal and delay

The point at which applications in Czechia most often come unstuck is the translation’s failure to meet the formal requirement. Second comes the housing document: the right to occupy the accommodation is expected to be shown by a document bearing the landlord’s signature and, where necessary, attested, since verbal permission or a simple tenancy agreement may not be regarded as enough. The third is health insurance not being provided by a policy valid in Czechia. Documents running out of validity because the appointment at the mission was obtained late is a further frequent problem.

The apostille and translation chain

The right order is to obtain the document with a current date, have it apostilled in Türkiye and have it translated last. The apostille certificate is part of the text to be translated. For translations to be submitted in Czechia, a court-appointed translator’s seal and physical binding are expected. Which attestation each document needs is set out on our document page, and a comparison with countries whose formal requirements are not this strict can be found in our country guide.

Children, school and reporting back to Türkiye

Where children are being brought to Czechia the birth certificate establishes parentage, but the examination concentrates on custody. A parent coming alone is asked for a document showing that the other parent consents to the child settling abroad; where there has been a divorce, the whole of the judgment settling custody is translated together with the finality endorsement. These translations too have to be bound to the source document and sealed, which lengthens the preparation time.

School enrolment proceeds as a chain of its own. To decide which class the child will be placed in, the school management asks for earlier education documents and the birth certificate, and a Czech translation is expected at this stage as well. Since enrolment periods open on set dates, preparing these papers at the same time as the immigration file is the sensible course.

Reporting a child born in Czechia, and a marriage celebrated there, to the civil registry in Türkiye is a separate procedure and generally runs through the Turkish consulate. Until the report is made, the person continues to appear in the records in Türkiye with their former marital status, which creates obstacles in title deed, inheritance and power of attorney matters. At this step the Czech document has to be translated into Turkish; the direction reverses.

The spelling of names calls for care too. In Czech records the question of writing women’s surnames with the local suffix can arise; taking the spelling in the passport as the basis and keeping to it on every document reduces the number of correction requests that follow. Once an entry has been created, correcting it takes far longer than getting it right in the first place, and a correction request means new documents and a new sealed translation as well. Making a note of the spelling used in the first file is therefore advisable.

Marrying in Czechia

A Turkish citizen marrying in Czechia is asked for a birth certificate, a civil status certificate, a certificate confirming that there is no impediment to marriage and a record showing their residence status. All of the documents are submitted with a certified translation. After the ceremony the marriage is entered in the local register and becomes the foundation of the residence file.

On renewal of the card it is shown once more that the family tie continues and the conditions have been kept up. At the permanent residence stage a language examination comes into play. Where new documents are needed from Türkiye, both the time to obtain them and the time to have them translated in the required form have to be allowed for; to see the cost per page you can look at our pricing page, and you can upload your documents to request a quotation.

This page is intended as guidance; the attestation regime of a country and the form of document it requires may be updated over time. We recommend that you learn the current position from the authority that will carry out the procedure.
