The recognition decision is made by a university

In Czechia, recognition of a foreign higher education diploma is carried out by a Czech university running a comparable programme in the field concerned. MŠMT sets the general framework and in certain cases has competence itself, but the ordinary route runs through a university. The university compares the content and the length of your programme with its own, and if it sees a significant gap it may require an additional examination. Which university you apply to in Czechia therefore has a bearing on the outcome; the same diploma can be assessed differently at different institutions.

Applying for admission as a student is a separate route, and it can be taken without waiting for a recognition decision. For applications to postgraduate programmes the institution will most often make its own assessment. Deciding at the outset which route you will follow spares you preparing documents you do not need.

Why each document is asked for

The diploma shows the degree; the academic transcript, with its breakdown of courses and credits, provides the basis of the comparison. Course descriptions are requested so that a curriculum comparison can be made in the recognition application, and they are expected to carry university approval. Undergraduate applications call for secondary education documents and the entrance examination result. A language proficiency certificate is a threshold of its own on programmes taught in Czech; on English-medium programmes an English-language certificate is asked for.

The formal requirement that sends files back

In Czechia the physical form of the translation is strictly enforced: the court-appointed translator binds the translation to the source document with a ribbon and seals it. If that unity has been broken, or if the translation is submitted as a separate sheet of paper, the file is not accepted. This is the problem encountered most often, and no amount of quality in the content makes up for it. The second most frequent is submitting course descriptions without approval. The third is failing to settle which university the application is going to, so that the file goes to the wrong institution.

The order of translation and seal

The sequence: the target university is identified, the original documents are gathered, the attestation step is completed in Türkiye, and the whole text, the attestation certificate included, is then translated, bound to the source document and sealed. The binding is an inseparable part of the translation. You can compare levels of attestation document by document in our document guide, and the practice of neighbouring countries in our country list.

The integrity of the physical file

Binding the translation to the source document is not merely a custom in Czechia; it is what establishes the identity of the document. Once the binding is done, the translation and the source document become a single instrument, and if that unity is broken the instrument loses its validity. Opening a bound translation, pulling out the staple or separating the sheets to photocopy them are therefore things not to be done. If a photocopy is needed, the right course is to copy the bound set in its entirety and, where necessary, to have a second original set prepared.

That brings the question of how many copies to prepare to the fore. You may have to submit one and the same document to the university, to the recognition application and to the residence procedure, and each of them may want a copy of its own. Having more than one bound copy made at the outset is both cheaper and quicker than going back to the translator afterwards. In electronic applications, the scan of the bound set is expected to show that the set is intact.

  • Never separate a bound translation at any stage.
  • Work out at the outset how many copies you will need.
  • Make sure the binding and the seal are visible in the scan.
  • Obtain course descriptions with university approval.

Which university a recognition application goes to in Czechia bears directly on the scope of the outcome. Finding an institution that runs a comparable programme in your field is the first step, and what decides the matter is the content of the programme rather than its name. On interdisciplinary programmes it can be arguable which faculty has competence, and weeks are lost while a file sent to the wrong institution is redirected. A short letter to the department before you apply removes that risk.

For admission as a student, on the other hand, you can apply without waiting for a recognition decision. On programmes taught in English, documents in English are accepted; a Czech translation is needed mainly for formal recognition and administrative procedures. Knowing that distinction can bring down the volume of translation at the first stage appreciably.

An explanation of the credit and grading scale, however, should be included in the translation in every case; the curriculum comparison is made using that information.

Medicine and engineering are a common choice among candidates coming from Türkiye to Czechia, and on those programmes the examination goes into more detail. Course descriptions, practical hours and the length of the programme may be requested, and obtaining these documents with official approval while you are in Türkiye is far easier than asking for them from a distance later. It is also worth reckoning with the fact that the documents will stay in use for a long time. Having a second copy of the bound and sealed translation made at the outset saves repeating the same work at the professional registration or residence stage after graduation, and buys you time when that moment comes.

Because the formal requirement is clear, a file prepared correctly from the start saves time. You can look at our pricing page, and upload your documents to request a quotation.

The information on this page gives the general framework; the authority you apply to may ask for further documents or for a different form. It is a good idea to put any point you are unsure about to the institution before you apply.
