What this application usually calls for
The final list varies with the institution’s own announcement; the set below is a starting point.
SAAIC gives information; the decision is taken elsewhere
Information and guidance on the recognition of foreign education documents in Slovakia is provided through SAAIC. The decision on academic recognition, however, is usually taken by a Slovak university running a programme in the field concerned; that institution compares the content and the length of your programme with its own. Where professional recognition is needed, the competent authority for the field comes into play instead. Confusing the three channels sends the file to the wrong place and costs weeks of waiting.
For admission as a student, on the other hand, an application can usually be made without waiting for a recognition decision; the institution carries out its own assessment. Settling at the outset which of these you are heading for also settles the set of documents to be prepared.
What each document is for
The diploma shows the degree and the institution that awarded it; the academic transcript, with its course and credit information, provides the basis for the comparison. Course contents are asked for in an academic recognition application so that the difference in curriculum can be measured. Undergraduate applications call for secondary school documents and the result of the entrance examination. A language certificate is a separate condition on programmes taught in Slovak; on programmes run in English, an English certificate is required.

The shortcoming seen most often
The most widespread problem in Slovakia is a translation made by a translator who is not entered in the Ministry of Justice register. Entry in the register is a condition of official procedures, and a translation from outside it is not put in the file. The second frequent problem is an academic recognition application made to the wrong university – where the field does not match, the file is refused. The third is course contents submitted without official approval; no comparison can then be made.
Where translation comes in the process
The order runs like this: the channel and the institution are settled, the originals are gathered, the certification step is completed in Türkiye, and then the whole text, the certification endorsement included, is translated and sealed. Leaving the translation until last ensures that the endorsement is not missed. You will find the level of certification needed document by document on our document page, and the differences in practice between countries in our country guide.
How to find the right university
An application for academic recognition in Slovakia is made to a university running a similar programme in your field. The test looks vague at first sight but is in fact concrete: what decides the matter is not the name of the programme you graduated from but its content. In engineering sub-disciplines, or in interdisciplinary programmes, which university has competence can be open to argument. In such cases asking the information centre produces a faster result than sending a file straight to a university.
The second point is that more than one aim can be pursued with the same documents. Academic recognition, admission to a university and professional recognition are separate channels, but the sets of documents largely overlap. Having the translation prepared once, to the widest scope, therefore costs less than having a separate translation done for each channel. Deciding how many copies you need at the outset belongs to the same logic.
- Look for the institution by the content of the programme, not by its name.
- If in doubt, ask the information centre.
- Have the translation prepared once, to the widest scope.
- Settle in advance how many copies you need.
That an application for admission as a student can be made in Slovakia without waiting for a recognition decision is a detail that eases the timetable. Running the admission application and the recognition application in parallel reduces two processes to a single plan. Since the documents are largely the same, no extra translation cost arises; the only gain is time, and in the enrolment period time is the most valuable resource there is.
On the document side, the length of the programme and its credit load must be plainly visible. Where that information is scattered across the academic transcript, a short letter of confirmation from the university strengthens the file. Nor can a grade equivalence be worked out without an explanation of the marking scale; if that explanation is on a separate sheet, it must be included in the translation.
On programmes run in English, documents in English may be accepted; translation into Slovak is needed mainly for official recognition and administrative business.
Another practical matter in Slovakia is how long these documents stay in use. A process that begins with student status brings the same documents back at the work, residence and professional recognition stages after graduation. Having a second copy of the sealed translation made at the outset, and keeping digital copies, saves the same work being done over again at those stages. Keeping a record of the terminology used also keeps documents added later consistent with the first set. And since originals may be called for at enrolment, having the documents with you is the simplest way of being ready for a request that comes at the last minute.
One last reminder: the rules of form set out in application guides are conditions, not advice. Reading the guide from beginning to end is the quickest and cheapest way of seeing the details that vary from one institution to another; the answer to most questions is already written there.
Identifying the right institution at the outset is the greatest saving of time to be had here. You can look at our pricing page and request a quotation by uploading your documents.
This page is meant as guidance; the certification regimes of countries and the form of documents required may be updated over time. Settling at the outset the form the institution wants saves the work having to be done again later.
