The translation requirement for a Spanish visa: what student and work applications need
In Spanish student and work visas, the expectation of a Spanish translation and the question of which documents have to be translated shape the application.
People applying to Spain in order to study or to work usually leave the translation question to the last minute while putting their file together, and then find themselves short of time. Yet the translation requirement is an item that has to be planned from the outset, according to the type of application.
Documents are largely translated into Spanish
A Spanish translation is expected for most diplomas, transcripts, criminal records, employment contracts and civil registry documents. An English document may be acceptable on some programmes, but for the official papers submitted to the consulate the expectation of a Spanish translation is stronger. Because which document is asked for varies with the status you are applying for (student or work), it is important to confirm the current document list with the relevant application centre.
Student and work files carry weight in different places
In student applications, education documents and evidence of financial means come to the fore, while in work applications the employment contract and professional documents take on the weight. In both kinds of file you may meet a request for sworn translation and, depending on the case, for an apostille. Since whether an apostille is needed varies from document to document, this has to be handled one document at a time.
The most fragile point of an application is a set of documents prepared in the right language but with incomplete certification, or the other way round. Working out the time needed for translation and certification in advance is the safest way to be ready for the appointment date. At our Ankara Kızılay office we assess student and work files separately, according to their purpose, and draw up the document plan.
