NAATI-certified translation in Australian applications: the logic and a practical route from Türkiye

Australian visa and immigration applications sometimes come with a request for a NAATI-certified translation. For applicants from Türkiye this may look hard to obtain at first glance, but understanding the logic behind it makes the process easier.

NAATI is a translator accreditation system

NAATI is a body that accredits translators and interpreters in Australia. A NAATI-certified translation means a translation produced by a translator authorised by that system. The aim is for the translation to carry a certain standard of quality and reliability. This approach rests on a basis of trust similar to the idea of sworn translation in Türkiye.

A practical approach for applicants from Türkiye

Not every Australian application carries a NAATI requirement; for some procedures a standard translation or a different form of approval may be enough. The first step is therefore to read the current translation requirement of the institution you are applying to. If NAATI is specifically asked for, you need to follow a route that meets it; if it is not, you can take your sworn translation through the usual process. Clarifying from the outset which document needs which approval prevents needless repetition.

The most common confusion arises when it is not read clearly whether NAATI is required in the application, and the translation ends up being done twice. Understanding the document requirement correctly from the start prevents lost time and effort. In our office we first confirm the requirement on Australian files, then plan the appropriate translation route together with you.
