Which countries accept a Turkmen translation?
The same language is subject to a different certification regime from one country to the next. Choose the country your document is going to:
Almost all demand for Turkmen translation comes out of education and family matters. A large number of Turkmenistan nationals study in Türkiye, and the natural result is that diplomas, academic transcripts, recognition files and student certificates form the main body of the work. Construction and contracting agreements come second.
A Latin alphabet of its own
Turkmen is written today in a Latin-based alphabet, but that alphabet is not the same as the one used for the Turkish of Türkiye: some sounds are carried by letters Turkish does not have, and others by Turkish letters with a different sound value. In Turkmen texts typed on a Turkish keyboard we regularly see those letters reduced to their nearest Turkish counterpart. On an official document that makes the word unrecognisable, and in a name it produces an outright identity mismatch.
Older documents, on the other hand, were drawn up in Cyrillic. Pension and recognition files still bring them in, and working out whether a document in Cyrillic is Turkmen or Russian is the first step before any translation.
Approval of documents is a subject of its own here
For documents going to Turkmenistan or coming from it, the chain of approvals is longer and less predictable than for European countries. Which body wants which approval can differ from one procedure to the next, so it would not be sound to draw a definite route before seeing the letter from the authority the document is to be submitted to. On files that reach us we ask for that letter first, and shape the translation to fit it.
Turkmen is one of the languages for which the pool of sworn translators in Türkiye is narrow. That affects planning rather than quality: in busy periods, and above all in the university enrolment months, delivery can run longer than for standard languages. If you are working to tight dates such as an enrolment window, send the file early; rather than name a day we cannot keep, we prefer to set out the position from the start.
Documents we see most often
| Document | Use |
|---|---|
| Secondary school diploma and marks certificate | University enrolment and recognition |
| Higher education diploma and academic transcript | Postgraduate application, recognition |
| Birth and civil registry records | Residence permit, family matters |
| Medical report | Student enrolment and visa files |
| Construction contract and progress payment documents | Contracting work |
School names on diplomas and marks certificates call for particular care. Some schools in Turkmenistan carry the name of a person or an institution, and the established practice is to keep the original name rather than translate it, placing an explanatory rendering beside it. Marking systems do not map onto one another either; we do not convert a mark, we carry across whatever the source says. The body carrying out the recognition assessment converts marks against its own scale and will not accept the translator’s reading.
Consistency of course titles is just as decisive in transcripts. If the same course is translated one way on the transcript and another way on the course description, the file is treated as incomplete. We therefore prefer to take all of a student’s documents at once and translate them against a shared term list; where work arrives piece by piece, that consistency is harder to build.
Spelling of names and surnames
Surnames on Turkmenistan documents may reach us with Russian-derived suffixes and with separately inflected forms for women, while more recent documents use local forms. The spelling on the same person’s secondary school diploma and on their passport can differ. In translation the spelling we treat as authoritative is the Latin-script field of the passport, and we show the differing form of the source document in a translator’s note, so that the university can tie the two documents to one person.
Where the patronymic occupies a field of its own, we translate that field and do not move its content into the surname box. The form of the name containing the special Turkmen letters is also preserved in a note where this is needed. When siblings’ documents arrive together, we keep the spelling of the surname identical across the whole file, so the family connection is visible to the institution.
When you send your documents
Send the identity page of the passport, the list of documents issued by the institution and any earlier translations together. Make sure the scan is sharp: the text of seals and stamps forms part of the translation, and a seal that cannot be read draws the process out.
