Tatar holds one of the more unusual positions among the languages on our rate list. In the region where it is spoken, most official correspondence is conducted in Russian, so the documents that reach Türkiye are in fact usually Russian. Requests for Tatar translation generally arise somewhere else altogether: family archives, old civil registry and neighbourhood records, academic texts, cultural publications, and regional documents drawn up in two languages.
A language close to Turkish, an alphabet that is not
Structurally, Tatar sits close to Turkish; the ordering of suffixes and the shape of the sentence feel familiar. It is written today in Cyrillic, however, with a set of additional letters that Russian does not use. Those letters carry the front vowels and the guttural consonants, and a reader who knows Russian but not Tatar cannot decode them. The assumption that anyone with Russian will manage does not hold for this language.
Older documents may instead turn up in Arabic or in Latin script, the alphabet having changed several times over the twentieth century. In family archive work this changes the nature of the job entirely: the text is not simply translated, it is first read. We assess such work separately and give a turnaround only after seeing the document.
What we watch for when translating from Turkish into Tatar
- Semantic drift in shared vocabulary. The two languages share a great many words, but the Tatar counterpart may have narrowed or widened under Russian influence.
- Dropped letters. Writing a Tatar letter that is absent from the Cyrillic keyboard as the nearest Russian one turns the word into a different word.
- Rendering administrative terms with Turkish equivalents. The institutional structure of the region follows the order of the Russian Federation, and the names of institutions in Türkiye cannot stand in for it.
- Turkicising place names. Settlement names appearing in the document are kept in their official form.
Types of work that come in
| Type of work | Description |
|---|---|
| Family archives and genealogy | Old registry ledgers, letters, gravestone inscriptions |
| Academic texts | Articles and theses in Turkology and history |
| Bilingual official documents | Papers from regional bodies carrying a Tatar column |
| Cultural publications and subtitles | Books, magazines, documentaries and promotional texts |
What these have in common is that the result goes to a reader rather than to an institution. Even so, where a document is official in character we provide sworn translation and, if it is required, notarisation; in cultural texts, fluency and register come first. Telling us at the outset which purpose you have in mind lets us route the work to the right translator.
A question that comes up again and again in genealogy files is what happens to the passages that cannot be read. Our practice is settled: we do not guess, we mark the illegible part with a translator’s note. Because dates and place names in old ledgers were written with abbreviations, these notes add to the reliability of the file, and institutions themselves prefer a clearly flagged gap to a wrongly filled line.
Name spelling and matching the records
Tatar names appear in official records in a form adapted to Russian spelling conventions, and the Tatar form a person uses may differ from it. The same name can show one vowel in the Russian record and another in the Tatar spelling. Where we are translating for an official procedure, the spelling we treat as authoritative is the Latin-script field of the passport; in a cultural text, the Tatar form the person prefers is kept. We settle that distinction in advance.
In the Russian registration system the patronymic occupies a field of its own, and surnames take a separately inflected feminine form. We do not convert these forms, we carry them across as they stand; the difference in form between members of one family is not an error but the system itself.
Let us be plain about timing
Tatar is one of the languages for which the pool of sworn translators in Türkiye is narrow, and for archive texts written in the older alphabets the number of specialists is very small indeed. On such work delivery can run noticeably longer than for standard languages, and we can only give a date once we have seen the document. Rather than name a date we cannot keep, we set out the position from the start. You can upload your document here and ask for an assessment, and unit rates are on our pricing page.
The information here is general in nature; the level of approval required for this language differs according to the destination country. Ask the competent authority to confirm before you file your application.
