The first question worth asking about Swahili translation is whether the translation is needed at all. Across East Africa a large share of official correspondence runs in English, and the diplomas, company papers and customs documents that reach Türkiye are usually in English already. The need for Swahili arises elsewhere: in official documents issued in Tanzania, in local government correspondence, in field projects and in promotional material.

Noun classes: the core difficulty of the language

Swahili sorts nouns into classes, and every class carries its own prefix. That prefix governs not only the noun but the adjective attached to it, the numeral, the demonstrative and the verb, so an agreement chain runs the length of the sentence. Turkish has nothing equivalent, and this is where the real difficulty of the language pair lies. Break one link in the chain and the sentence does not merely go wrong, it becomes unclear which object is being spoken about. In contracts and technical texts that leads straight to misreading.

The verb, for its part, packs subject, object, tense and negation into a single word. A whole Turkish sentence can shrink to one Swahili word, and the reverse happens too. A translation that advances by matching word to word therefore comes out both longer and artificial.

Common mistakes in translation from Turkish into Swahili

  • Broken agreement chains, where the adjective or the verb is inflected in some general way rather than according to the class of the noun.
  • Mixing Kenyan and Tanzanian usage. The two countries diverge in their administrative terminology and in official register, and in Tanzania Swahili covers a wider official domain.
  • Keeping English terms where they are not needed, or the opposite: forcing a translation on institution names that are established in English.
  • Dropping the courtesy formulas. Swahili correspondence expects an opening and a closing, and a text that goes straight to the point reads as rude.

What kind of work comes in

Type of workContext
Local government and civil registry correspondenceOfficial documents issued in Tanzania
Project and tender papersConstruction, energy and agricultural investments
Education and health projectsDevelopment and aid programmes
Promotional and training materialTexts written for field staff
Diplomas and student documentsThose studying in Türkiye

Field material is the most demanding item in this language. The text goes not to an institution but straight to the user, so clarity counts for as much as accuracy of terminology. On work of this kind we define the reader at the outset: whether the text is going to a technician, a farmer or a teacher decides the vocabulary directly.

With project and tender papers, the recurring problem is the English intermediate text. A document that travels from Turkish into English and from there into Swahili loses meaning twice, so wherever possible we work from the Turkish source directly.

Interpreting and field support

Part of what comes in for this language is spoken rather than written: business meetings, site visits and online sessions. Swahili is spoken across a wide area, and pronunciation and word choice shift from region to region, so knowing which country your counterparts come from lets us assign the right interpreter.

Sending us the agenda beforehand, along with a list of technical terms if you have one, improves the outcome noticeably. In agriculture, energy and construction meetings especially, working through the terminology in advance prevents pauses during the session.

Name spelling and turnaround

Because Swahili is written in the Latin alphabet, transliteration is not an issue, though names of Arabic origin are widespread in the region and their Latin spelling can vary from one country to another. The same name may be spelled one way on Tanzanian papers and another way on Kenyan ones, and the spelling we treat as authoritative is the one on the identity page of the passport. Surnames do not work the same way for everyone either. Where the records use the father’s name as a second given name, we carry the fields across exactly as they stand and never fill an empty box on our own initiative.

Swahili is one of the languages for which the pool of sworn translators in Türkiye is narrow. Short documents come out within a reasonable time, while multi-page project files can take longer to deliver, and we say so at the start.
