Which countries accept a Lithuanian translation?

A changing practice in the spelling of names

For many years this country recorded foreign names phonetically and with a grammatical ending attached: men’s names closed with one ending, women’s names with another. A more recent reform allows the name to be written in its original Latin letters under certain conditions. What this means for translation is that the same person can appear with two different spellings, one on the older documents and one on the newer.

The translator does not pick between the two. Each document is translated with the form that appears on it, and showing that both forms belong to the same person is done through a separate document. Since female surnames have endings that distinguish married from unmarried status alongside an option that draws no such distinction, whichever form the source document uses is the form that stays.

Stacked participles and an archaic system of inflection

This is one of the languages that has kept its inflectional system in an old form: seven cases, two genders and full agreement inside the noun phrase. What sets official texts apart, though, is how heavily they lean on participles. Turkish participial constructions do have direct counterparts here, but those counterparts also inflect for gender, number and case, so the chain grows heavy fast.

The practical upshot: carrying a long Turkish sentence across intact is technically possible, yet it produces a text nobody can read. The provision is unpicked instead, the conditions are distributed over separate sentences, and it stays explicit which obligation each condition attaches to.

The sectors the work comes from

Road haulage is the backbone of demand in this language. Driving licences, vocational competence certificates, carriage and leasing contracts, accident reports and correspondence with insurers come through constantly. In such texts it is essential that category codes and references to international conventions survive unaltered.

The second area is logistics services and warehousing. The third is financial technology, where licence applications, terms of service and compliance documents interweave legal and technical language. The fourth covers residence and work applications, the fifth the recognition of higher education qualifications. Analysis reports and certificates of conformity in food and furniture exports also generate steady volume.

What gets translated on a multilingual pre-printed form

A large share of transport paperwork consists of pre-printed forms whose field headings are already printed in several languages. On such forms, what is subject to translation is not the printed headings but the entries filled in by hand or by printer: consignor and consignee details, description of the goods, type of packaging, weight and driver’s notes.

The common error is to translate the printed headings as well, which breaks the internationally recognised structure of the form. The correct approach is to keep that structure intact and translate only the completed entries, showing by field number which box each entry belongs to.

Handwritten remarks are the most critical part of all: damage, delay and reservations on delivery are usually noted on those very lines, and an insurance claim rests directly on how they are translated. Illegible passages are never guessed at; they are marked in square brackets.

A date format of its own

Official texts write the date year, month, day, with abbreviations placed after the year and day figures; dropping those abbreviations makes the document look incomplete. When the month is written out it goes into the genitive, and the base form cannot be used on its own.

The personal identity number carries the date of birth and the sex of the holder within it, so an error in transcription contradicts the date of birth given elsewhere. The marks above and below letters distinguish meaning and cannot be dropped. The decimal separator is a comma.
