The first question to ask about a Hindi translation is this: is the document really in Hindi? Most official correspondence in India is conducted in English, and the diplomas, commercial contracts and company papers that reach Türkiye are usually in English already. The need for Hindi translation arises mainly with civil registry records issued at state level, with local court judgments and with certain notarial acts. Separating out which pages are in Hindi when you send the file lets us work out both the fee and the timescale correctly.
Why Devanagari typesetting is a job of its own
In the Devanagari script the letters hang from a continuous line running across the top, and the word is joined visually by that line. Consonants that meet are not written separately but fuse into new shapes. These two features make line breaking and letter spacing wholly unlike anything in the Latin alphabet. In an ordinary word processor the fused forms can break apart and the line can be severed. On a printed official document that makes the document look careless even where the text is correct; we check the typesetting separately in a font that supports Devanagari.
Spoken Hindi and Urdu are very close to one another, but they are written in different alphabets and their formal vocabularies diverge: the literary register of Hindi leans on terms of Sanskrit origin, that of Urdu on terms of Persian and Arabic origin. Anyone wanting the same document rendered into both should plan the work as two separate jobs.
Frequent errors in translation from Turkish into Hindi
- Missing the level of respect. Hindi inflects address to the listener at more than one level, and official correspondence expects the highest; a neutral translation comes across as rude.
- Breaking gender agreement. In Hindi verbs and adjectives take gender from the subject; since Turkish carries no such marking, a female applicant’s text can end up translated with masculine forms.
- Failing to carry the grouping of figures across. In South Asia large numbers are spoken with different place names, and digits are grouped to match. In a commercial document the safest course is to give the amount in words as well.
- Translating institutional names. Most institutions in India are known by an official English name; the established name should be kept rather than translated.
Which documents come in
| Document | Context |
|---|---|
| Birth and marriage records | Civil registry matters handled at state level |
| Local court judgments | Family law and inheritance files |
| Powers of attorney and title deeds | Property transactions in India |
| Diploma and academic transcript | Student applications |
| Medical report and prescription | Health tourism files |
Although the apostille procedure in India is run centrally, the document may first have to be certified at state level; this is the link that actually lengthens the process. Planning at the outset where in that chain you will have the translation done keeps the same document from being issued twice.
Medicine names in medical reports call for particular care. The trade names of medicines manufactured in India differ from those used in Türkiye; in translation we work from the active substance and keep the trade name in brackets. Dose and frequency of administration are likewise carried across without conversion, in the units given in the source.
Transliteration of names
There is no single settled standard for the passage from Devanagari into the Latin alphabet; the same name is written in several ways and the values given to the sounds can vary by region. Rather than read the name afresh from the document, we therefore take the spelling on the identity page of the passport as our standard. Records in which the father’s name serves as a middle name, in which the surname box is left empty, or in which only a single name appears are common; we translate these fields as they stand and put nothing of our own into an empty box.
In carrying Turkish names into Hindi, likewise, one set of equivalents is fixed for the ç, ş, ğ and ı sounds and kept throughout the file.
Timescale and submission
Hindi is a language we work in regularly, though the pool is not as wide as it is for the European languages; short documents move through the standard workflow, while for court files running to many pages we may ask for extra time. For the fee and the delivery date, upload your document; unit prices appear on our price list.
The information here is general in nature; the level of certification required in this language varies with the destination country. The requirement in force on the date of the transaction should be taken as the standard.
