Demand for Bengali translation in Türkiye comes from two separate directions: the student and worker files arriving from Bangladesh, and the paperwork of the ready-made garment supply chain. Türkiye’s textile sector is at once a competitor and a customer of Bangladesh, and that relationship generates audit reports, factory documents and order contracts. In personal files the weight falls on civil registry records and educational documents.

The Bengali script and typesetting

Bengali writing hangs its letters from a line running along the top, and consonants that meet fuse into new shapes. There are a great many of these conjunct forms, and not every typeface produces all of them correctly. In a document prepared with an unsuitable font the letters come apart and the headline stroke breaks; the text may be accurate, yet the document looks careless and at some institutions counts as illegible. We check the output for exactly this before delivery.

A further detail: vowel signs may sit to the left of a consonant, to the right, above it or below it. Reading a text from a handwritten form, it is not always obvious which consonant a given sign belongs to, and the risk of misreading rises sharply on low-resolution scans.

Recurring mistakes from Turkish into Bengali

  • Flattening the level of respect. Bengali conjugates the verb at three distinct levels according to whom one is addressing; official correspondence expects the highest of them, and a neutral rendering reads as discourteous.
  • Failing to carry across the grouping of numerals. South Asia names the digits of large numbers differently, so writing the amount out in words as well in a commercial document heads off a misreading.
  • Confusing Bangladeshi usage with that of West Bengal. The official terms and the names of institutions differ between the two, so which side the document is going to must be known from the start.
  • Translating institution names. Many bodies in Bangladesh are known by an official English name; the established name should be kept rather than translated.

Audit reports are the most technical item in this language. They cite the names of international standards and clause numbers; rather than translate these, we keep them in their original form and give the explanations in Turkish. Altering a standard number opens the validity of the report to question.

Transliterating names and matching identities

There is no single established standard for rendering Bengali names in the Latin alphabet; one name may appear in several spellings, and given names of religious origin are usually written in abbreviated form. Whether to expand that abbreviation is the critical question: if the passport abbreviates, the translation abbreviates too. Re-reading the name from the document and writing down what seems to be “the correct version” leaves the institution unable to match the two documents to one another.

Surnames do not work the same way for everyone either; in some records a family or place name stands where a surname would. We translate these fields as they stand and never fill an empty box on our own initiative. Where a family’s documents arrive together, keeping the spelling of names consistent across the whole file from one hand forestalls the discrepancies that would otherwise surface in later applications.

Date format is another point of care. Bangladeshi documents commonly run day-month-year, but the month is sometimes abbreviated and sometimes given as a figure. To avoid swapping day and month on a date written in figures, we spell the month name out in words while keeping the source format as well; this is where errors in dates of birth most often occur.

Let us be honest about timing

Bengali is one of the languages for which the pool of sworn translators in Türkiye is narrow. Short civil registry and educational documents come out in reasonable time; with multi-page technical reports and handwritten records the delivery time can stretch. If your deadline is tight, say so at the outset and we will schedule the work accordingly. For the fee and delivery date, upload your document; unit rates are set out on our pricing page.
