Which countries accept a Albanian translation?
The same language is subject to a different certification regime from one country to the next. Choose the country your document is going to:
The first thing to settle in an Albanian translation is whether the document is going to Albania or to Kosovo. The standard written language is shared, but institutional names, administrative terms and some legal concepts have settled differently in the two countries. Using Tirana’s way of naming institutions in a power of attorney destined for Kosovo will delay the procedure, even where the text is linguistically faultless.
Gheg and Tosk: the split is in speech, not in writing
The northern and southern branches of Albanian diverge markedly; the written language rests on the southern branch, and that standard is what official documents use. In written translation, then, the choice of dialect is not an issue. It becomes one in spoken work: an interpreter working with speakers from Kosovo or northern Albania needs to understand the northern branch. If you are asking for interpreting, telling us where the other party comes from is genuinely useful.
The alphabet is Latin-based but extended with two-letter units, and the letters ë and ç distinguish meaning in their own right. Writing e in place of ë for the sake of an easier keyboard is a widespread habit and is not accepted in official translation, because that letter frequently carries the definiteness or the plural of a noun.
The commonest slip from Turkish into Albanian: the noun’s two forms
Every Albanian noun exists in two basic forms, definite and indefinite, and the difference shows at the end of the word. Proper names take their share of this: a personal name used inside a sentence may pick up an ending. The name written into an identity field on an official document, however, must stay bare, in its dictionary form. If the translator follows the flow of the sentence and leaves the name with its ending attached, the institution cannot treat it as the same name as the one in the passport. The same trouble shows up with company names and city names.
- Rendering legal terms with Italian or French patterns: Albanian legal vocabulary has drawn on those languages, but the established equivalents are fixed, and a term coined by analogy will not be recognised.
- Carrying “Mr/Mrs” and titles across unchanged; formulas of address are constructed differently in Albanian official correspondence.
- Matching Kosovan and Albanian identity numbers as though they belonged to the same field. The two countries run separate numbering systems; the field label is translated, the number is left exactly as it is.
Where the demand concentrates
| Document | Context |
|---|---|
| Civil registry and family status documents | Marriage, residence permits, citizenship |
| Company registry and tender papers | Construction, energy and infrastructure work |
| Diplomas, academic transcripts, recognition letters | Students studying in Türkiye |
| Powers of attorney and title deeds | Property sales and inheritance |
| Driving licences and vehicle registration papers | Road crossings and registration |
The specifications that come in on construction and infrastructure work are the most labour-intensive item in this language pair. Where the technical term list is not drawn up and approved at the start, the same material ends up under different names in different parts of the document, and questions are raised during tender evaluation.
Kosovo and Albania: separate chains of approval
The two countries do not accept documents on identical terms. At what stage a document issued in Türkiye receives an apostille, and whether the translation is attested before a notary here or in the country of destination, varies with the procedure. Some procedures in Kosovo may require the document to be re-attested by a local translator after it arrives; that does not mean the translation done in Türkiye is invalid, it means one more link in the chain.
The letter from the institution usually states plainly which form of approval it wants. Pass that letter on to us and we will prepare the translation to fit the right chain, sparing you the cost of an attestation you did not need.
Spelling of names and delivery
Because Albanian uses the Latin alphabet, transliterating names is nowhere near as fraught as it is with languages in Cyrillic or Arabic script; even so, ë and ç are often written in passports as their plain counterparts. Where the document has the marked form and the passport does not, we take the passport as our basis. For the Turkish letters ı, ğ and ü we likewise fix equivalents and keep them unchanged throughout the file.
The pool of translators in this language is adequate; short documents come back within the standard time. When you send the document, state the destination country, the institution and whether an apostille is needed. For the fee by page count and the delivery date, upload your document; unit prices are set out in our price list.
The fees on this page are read from the current tariff; they vary with the type of document and the speed of delivery. We recommend following the official announcements for the practice in force.
