Driving Licence Translation for France
Two things shape a driving licence translation for France: whether the document is going into the exchange procedure (échange de permis), and who is going to produce the translation. This page looks only at what makes a driving licence translation for France different; for the general structure of the document and the logic behind its codes, see our driving licence translation page, and for France’s general regime our country guide.

The language of the file and the layout of the card
An échange file in France runs in French, so the licence is translated into French as well, and the small, densely packed structure of the card means every field has to be reproduced together with its layout. The category columns, code cells and date boxes on the front and back of the card are carried across in full; if the category-and-date table on the back is skipped, the préfecture cannot see which class the driver gained and when. Pictograms and symbols are explained where necessary.
Because documents uploaded to an ANTS file are submitted as scans, scan quality is decisive; stamps, signatures and the security features of the card must be discernible. A blurred scan renders even a flawless translation useless. The translation shows in its declaration which copy the scanned document rests on, and it carries the information on the card across as it stands, without converting it into a French category; the conversion and the equivalence are for the préfecture to determine.
The exchange period and permis à points
For a driver settling in France, exchanging a Turkish licence for a French permis is tied to a limited period running from the point at which residence or a right of residence is obtained; the échange application is expected to be filed before that window closes. How long the period runs and what the reciprocity conditions are depend on the regulations, so confirm this with the relevant préfecture or from an ANTS announcement before you start. The translation has no bearing on that period; it only allows the file to be completed in full and on time. Planning the translation at the beginning of the residence process is therefore safer than leaving it to the last moment.
Drivers in France are monitored under a points-based system (permis à points), and the French document obtained through the exchange enters that system too; but this assessment is made by the préfecture, not by the translation. Alongside the licence, an ANTS file will usually also hold proof of address (justificatif de domicile) and the residence permit (titre de séjour); keeping the name and address details in those documents consistent with the translation preserves the integrity of the file and prevents needless queries.
Whether an exchange is possible at all depends on how the Turkish licence is assessed within the reciprocity framework with France; in some cases the échange proceeds directly, in others further conditions arise. That assessment is the préfecture’s business, not a matter for the translator’s discretion. By carrying the class, restriction codes and dates on the licence across as they stand, the translation lays the ground for the authority to make an accurate comparison; interpreting a class or a code undermines that comparison.
Échange de permis and the ANTS platform
Licence exchange applications in France run largely through the online ANTS platform (Agence nationale des titres sécurisés); what used to be done at a préfecture office has now become a digital file. A Turkish licence may be subject to échange within a given period, within the framework of reciprocity and residence conditions with France. As the document is uploaded to that file as a scan, the translation has to be legible and the stamps and dates discernible; a blurred scan makes even a flawless translation impossible to assess.
Do not translate into the catégorie B scale
The classes on a Turkish licence overlap broadly with the French permis system (catégorie B, BE, A…); but equating a class directly with a French category in the translation means taking on the equivalence that the exchange authority is there to determine. The translator carries the class and the restriction code across as they stand; the code belongs to an international scheme and is not translated. The date of issue matters particularly, because in some cases the licence is required to have been held for a certain length of time; confusion over the date format has a direct effect on the procedure.
| Element of the licence | In a translation for France |
|---|---|
| Class (B, BE…) | Carried across; not equated with a catégorie |
| Restriction code | An international code; preserved |
| Date of issue | Exactly as given; critical for the time condition in the échange |
| Full name | Consistent with the passport and the residence document |
A translator on a court of appeal list (traducteur assermenté)
A translation submitted to an official procedure in France must be produced by a sworn translator (traducteur assermenté) on the list of a court of appeal (Cour d’appel); this requirement can arise for a driving licence as well. The chain is different for a translation produced in Türkiye: the sworn translator signs it, the notary notarises it where required, and an apostille is attached. The safest step is to confirm which route will be accepted with the authority you are filing with (ANTS / préfecture).
- Verify that the translation was prepared by a listed assermenté or through the chain of steps in Türkiye.
- Do not try to translate the class and the code; carry them across as they stand.
- Obtain the apostille before the translation; a licence is an administrative document, so the apostille comes from the governor’s office.
France is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention; confirm the current position from the official HCCH list. You can plan your case from our single office in Ankara Kızılay, see the cost on our pricing page, and upload your document to request a quote. This page is for general information; confirm the conditions for the exchange from ANTS and from the announcement of the relevant préfecture.
